Also interwoven within the main conflicts are themes of race, biblical and unbiblical marriage, honoring ones parents, and the importance of community.
The sweethearts and main characters of the book, assertive Bertha Biddie and genteel Thaddeus Thad Bloom, endure disappointment and heartbreak as the desires to marry, help Annie, and follow Gods will collide. Tying these conflicts throughout the book is the principle of trust. Berthas father often reminds her to let God handle the details, and Thad often references the Psalms and other Scripture in his trials.
I was truly inspired by the genuine humanity inherent in Gruvers main characters. The smaller, heart-warming lessons of friendship tucked away in the plot are sure to delight the readers who love a good story.
