Read with discernment

I was given this devotional a number of years ago as a Christmas gift. Just had funny feeling from the moment I looked it over, but in honor of the giver I read the devotionals. When I got to #8 the red flags were flying. I will state I skimmed a few more after that but did not read much more of the book.
Piper is describing people's stories of their near death experiences. "...They encounter a bright light and then they see deceased relatives or spiritual figures such as Jesus or Buddha. Immediately they are sent back or pulled back....I've heard all those stories with few variations. I believe these people had a spiritual experience. They usually tell me that they felt such peace that they were reluctant to return, but a spiritual being told them they had to go back." (pg 29-30)
If Piper truly believes that faith in Jesus Christ is what grants us eternal life in heaven, how can he cite that some visitors to heaven saw spiritual figures like Buddha and give credence to their NDE?
For me, way off base.
