I am a freshman college student who is living away from home for the first time. I have always loved books and treasures and knowledge, and as I grow in the Lord the knowledge of His Word, I have been seeking the wisdom of faithful believers, both past and present, to help ground me in my Christian worldview. My pastor is enamored with John Piper, and after reading "Desiring God" I know why. I finished the book at 1:00 in this morning and as I closed it I knew that I had stumbled across a jewel that I will return to over and over again in the coming years.
Ecclesiastes 1:10 says that there is nothing new under the sun. That may be true, but John Piper has done a masterful job of describing age-old truth in a completely radical and refreshing way. Every single point is backed up solidly by the Scriptures. I cannot think of any aspect of my Christian life now apart from "Desiring God." My life and worldview has been forever changed - to orient around the glory of seeing and savoring God forever and ever.
If you are seeking God-glorifying works to build you up in your faith - I can think of no better place than "Desiring God."

This book is awesome, it dramatically changed the way i thought practically about God. It helped me understand how i can glorify him more in my life without looking at it as a duty but a joy.

Fantastic. Rev. Piper does an excellent job of explaining the purpose and description of glorifying God, and right away gives me hope, belief and the scripture to back it up that even I can live a life that glorifies our Lord. I'm not finished the book yet - this one is worthy of a slow and deliberate pace.

Be careful!
Cloaked behind the sweet words (e.g. "Desire" and "Grace" etc) are the deadly precepts of Greek Philosophy deemed inerrant and therefore demanded as the foundation of scriptural interpretation.... i.e.Plato's law of full (DDI) - doctrine of divine immutability.
One thinks he is being drawn closer to a more pure dedication to God, and doesn't realize that is not the real intent behind the material.

We are using this book as the focal point of a men's Bible study group. We had our first meeting last night, and came away with a lot of excitement about how our joy in the Lord can be magnified and passed along to others.
A study guide is available on their web site at no additional charge.

This title by Piper is the first I have read by the author, and will most likely not be the last. Piper in this book combines spiritual passion and scriptural principles to create a unique and inspiring work. He touches on practically every area of life with his theme of "Christian hedonism."
I look forward to reading more of his "devotional theology" -- I am sure he will offer more fresh doses of spirituality and God-exalting worship.

John Piper has managed to expound on the Larger Catechism's "What is the chief and highest end of man?" By digging into the 'golden nuggets' of profound Biblical truths that we are "to glorify God BY enjoying Him forever."
