Can we find a life filled with passion, without being overwhelmed by it?
In this groundbreaking book, John Eldredge invites readers to acknowledge the significance of desire, abandon resignation, and embark on an adventure he calls "our hearts most important journey." Eldredge writes, "There is a secret set within each of our hearts. It is the desire for life as it was meant to be." Yet how do we uncover our desires and learn to decipher them? As Eldredge says, "We all share the same dilemmawe long for life and were not sure where to find it. We wonder if we ever do find it, can we make it last? . . . We must journey to find the life we prize. And the guide we have been given is the desire set deep within, the desire we often overlook or mistake for something else or even choose to ignore. The greatest human tragedy is to give up the search."
Many good people have been told that the path to a holy life requires us to kill our hearts desires. And call it sanctification.
But in this re-release of one of Eldredges most inspiring works, we discover that God is the author of our deepest desires. He has given us desire, and he loves to fulfill our hearts desires. For as the Psalms declare, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (37:4).
God is calling to you through the desires of your heart.
How you respond will set the course for the rest of your life.
"[Desire] is a profound and winsome call to walk into the heart of God and hear Him sing to your soul about His love. In a world of frenzy and clamor about desire, we often miss the ache that lifts our face to look into His eyes. This book will stir your heart and invite you to know the one desire that captures all passion for His purpose. Drink in this work, and your life will not be the same."
Dan Allender, Author, The Healing Path

AnonymousAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Essential topic to understanding our heartJune 6, 2011AnonymousAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5John Eldridge wrote this book several years ago. I think it has been overlooked . His more popular books are Waking the Dead, The Sacred Romance and Wild at Heart. All are must reads, including this one Titled " Desire". This goes even deeper to understanding our hearts by seeing and understanding desire. We often see desire as something that will get us in trouble, cause us to sin and drift away from God. This isn't necessarily true.
John walks us through the fears we have concerning this topic - talks about the importance of admitting we have desire- what it's all really about - how we've been lied to and misguided to fear desire ...
But I think the big part of this book has to do with how we were created for so much more then this world - and nothing in this world will satisfy us.
I can't give this book enough credit for the insight and the important messages it gives.
Rob Vandiver5 Stars Out Of 5July 25, 2010Rob VandiverA book every Christian should read. Like many of Eldredge's books, you will not get the full effect unless you read it honestly, and are willing to face up to what is really going on, deep beneath the surface, in your soul. It also helps if you are broken when you read it. This book made me realize how Godless my life had become because I finally admitted what an arranger I had become. I was desparately committed to arranging my life for my own happiness, and when all that came crashing down around me, this book helped me to see that this was God's design all along. It was His plan to bring me to the end of myself so that I could see that He was really my desire all along.
Lily James4 Stars Out Of 5May 4, 2010Lily JamesJohn Eldredge is always relevant. He speaks from a modern man's journey with a passion not unlike the rest of us ordinary pilgrims who wrestle with the big issues of doubt, significance, meaning and hearing God in the everyday journey He calls us. I love to read and re-read John Eldredge's books as they always are a blessing in my journey of faith.
Pat5 Stars Out Of 5April 5, 2010PatMy life is so impacted by Eldredge. The Holy Spirit brought this book me at just the right time. Both for me and my daughter. After reading the book we are both going through the study guide. I work to implement the principles of the book. I long to attain the mind and heart set he talks of. The beauty of his writing coupled with his knowledge of the spiritual has helped me to see more clearly what letting go is about. and that we cannot find all we want in this world.
Ronnie5 Stars Out Of 5October 21, 2008RonnieThis book is deep... You can't read it in one sitting and you might have to re-read some of the chapters to make sure you "got it", but once you're done, you'll be free--free to desire and understand why some desires are met here and others in eternity. I can't say enough, it wouldn't do the book justice. You've got to read it.
