I have two kids who are two years apart. I started using this when my older daughter was in first grade, so obviously my pre-K child was just along for the ride. I planned on using a different series for each grade up until OC was in 4th, then repeat all four, simply reading the older student section instead of beginner, up until she was in eighth, and obviously I would read the beginner sections to my younger child if necessary. However this is not possible since only the first two series (Life and Heaven & Earth) have beginner sections (grades 1-2). The other two (orange one and red one) have only an older student section. This was my fault for not researching enough before making my plan. I had looked at the product descriptions for Life and the Heavens ones individually, since I didn't buy this four year all in one product and read about the differences. I just assumed all four series were the same set up. So this year I bought the red books and was disappointed to find they are way over the heads of my third and first graders. It's supposed to be 3rd-8th but my 3rd grader is completely lost and so am I. So I would say the beginner sections are adequate for 1st through 4th grade, not just thru 2nd, and if a 4th grader is interested they could read more in the older section. So anyway, I'm going to just repeat the Design for Life this year and then repeat Universe next year, then do the red and orange books when my daughter is in 5th grade. I think she will be more interested in the concepts by then and more able to comprehend heat & energy! Just NOTE: the green and blue series have beginner sections and the other two do not and are BORING and over the head of an average 3rd grader. I do LOVE and will keep using this excellent, comprehensive and fun curriculum though--at the appropriate age level! I'd like it if AIG would add a beginner section to the other series, or do something to make it more age appropriate. I don't think the red or orange series are accessible enough to a 3rd or 4th grader, but I also think the Life & Universe ones may not be challenging enough to an 8th grader in the older student section.
