Author Bio

Alison Winfree Pickrell spent thirty years as a Special Education teacher in Iredell County in rural North Carolina.

“I wrote this book in part to show the dignity and worth of those among us, like Daniel, who are considered handicapped and therefore less than normal,” Alison says. “But there is a little bit of hero in each one of us.”

Alison is also the author of two other novels—Unto the Least of These and As Eagles—and is working on her next novel, The Last Cordate, a fantasy.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Alison Pickrell

Tell us a little about yourself.  I taught special education for thirty years in Iredell County, a rural area of North Carolina. Many of the characters in my books are drawn from those years of teaching. I have grown twin stepsons, a seven year old grandson, two dogs, two cats, two aquariums of fish and a wonderful husband.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to write a book using the lines of a wonderful quote by an anonymous writer and starting each chapter with a line from the quote. I created a character, Timothy Wrenn, who would embody that quotation then created a second character, Daniel, to play against him. Timothy is a small asthmatic, very tidy librarian. Daniel is an extremely handicapped man being exhibited in a local carnival. This is truly an Odd Couple story.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?   The main thing I'm trying to show is that heroes come in unlikely packages and often the most heroic of deeds goes unseen and unacknowledged.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Back in 1986 when I wrote this book, I had gotten the idea for the character of Daniel from a short story by Ray Bradbury. I wrote him asking permission to use his idea and he sent me a personalized reply. I would love to get a published copy of my book into his hands even at this late date!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I am influenced by an ever widening circle of authors. On this project, Ray Bradbury was an inspiration. I also love the works of Walter Wangerin,Harper Lee, Anne Tyler and Frank Peretti to name a few.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:   Creating a world of characters who come alive under your fingertips has to be one of the sweetest joys on Earth!
