I'm always hesitant to pick up books which might be dubbed "Apologetic" in nature, but this book took me by surprise. Reitan defends a moderate -if not slightly liberal- version of Christianity, which renders his pursuit a worthwhile one in my opinion. Consequently, Reitan spends as much time rebutting various and sundry fundamentalisms as he does new atheist rhetoric. The arguments put forward here are different than those put forth in typical apologetic books; Reitan turns to mystical religious experience, and the longing for transcendent goodness as primary theistic supports. Further, his cosmological-ontological argument avoids the pitfalls of modern anti-evolutionary, and thus anti-scientific apologetics. It aims to establish the existence of a transcendent reality, not just a temporal demiurge-like cosmic tinkerer. I could go on, but I think it suffices to say that this book will be well worth your time if apologetics is of interest to you, and at the very least, is not going to bore you if you -like me- find apologetics to be a quite unnecessary pursuit.
