Readers will be holding their breath as they sail through this emotional and honest story of hope, faith, and love in the face of uncertainty. Talented author Dan Walsh skillfully tells an epic story through an intimate focus on two lost lovers. Inspired by real events, this moving novel will capture the hearts of all who dive into its pages.

Author Bio

Dan Walsh is the award-winning author of The Unfinished Gift, The Homecoming, and The Deepest Waters. A member of American Christian Fiction Writers, Dan served as a pastor for 25 years. He lives with his family in the Daytona Beach area, where he's busy researching and writing his next novel.

Publisher's Weekly

Walsh, a pastor turned full-time writer, surprises with a swashbuckling tale of a sunken preĀ–Civil War era steamship and its cargo of gold--and a newlywed couple who must make a harrowing decision. When a steamship heads directly into a hurricane on the Atlantic coast, John and Laura Foster must choose to stay together or be separated when women and children are evacuated to another ship. What makes the story more than romantic fluff is its basis in a true event, the sinking of the SS Central America and its payload of gold, and a dramatic subplot of Micah, a slave who longs to be free along with his family. Some flashbacks that provide backstory are awkwardly obvious, and characters seem to be more obsessed with sunsets than one might expect desperate survivors to be, but the story has penetrating moments. With this novel Walsh establishes himself as a Christian historical fiction writer who crafts credible character-driven stories. (Apr.) Copyright 2011 Reed Business Information.

I loved the characters in this book: The principled, newly-wed husband, the tender bride, the Christian captain, the scarred old slave who was a hero just by living his faith, even the dubious other family members of the groom!

This exciting story of adventure is inspired by a true story of the mid-1800's of a steamship that did go down off the eastern coast of the U.S., loaded with tons of gold from the California gold strike and a newly married couple on their honeymoon among the passengers. The men on that ship did put the women in the lifeboats and were left to sink with the ship.

This is a story of courage and love for fellowman that will inspire your heart to be brave and true in the face of horrific adversity and to yearn to ever lean, yourself, into the all-knowing, all-loving heart of the Savior. Enjoy the ride!

When you finish, read the afterward -- amazing true stories on which some of the story was based.

This is such a good book. It was full of suspense and romance. It was difficult to put the book down when I needed to do other things.
