Deep Green: Color Me Jealous is a teen novel by Melody Carlson, second in the True Colors series dealing with issues such as alcoholism, depression and suicide. The style immediately draws you in, sounding like a typical American teenage girl. The story moves along at a pace fast enough to hold interest, even when the narrator is musing to herself. The study questions at the end of the book are an interesting idea, and I wish that I had noticed them before I began reading.

"Having said that, I confess I was troubled by what I felt was explicit material. I’m not naïve enough to think that sex and drinking doesn’t happen at high school parties, but would I want my three high school aged teens to read a novel in which the protagonist describes some of the details of those events?

"I also felt the resolution was a bit simplistic: come to Jesus and your circumstances will instantly begin to improve. Even the “villains” in the story get their comeuppance in the end. The parents, though not major characters, are remarkably benign in the wake of some pretty catastrophic events.
