Deceived by Irene Hannon A Book Review

Irene Hannon is not a new author, but she is a new-to-me author. I will be looking for more of her books in the future. Deceived is the third book in her Private Justice series, so books one and two in the series would be a good place for me to go next, although this book read well as a stand-alone novel. It was very easy to follow without having the benefit of having read the first two.

Someone recently asked on Facebook if it was even possible for Irene Hannon to write a bad book. Well, if Deceived is any indication, the answer is a resounding NO!!! The blurb on the back leads readers unfamiliar with Hannons writing thinking the book will follow a very predictable storyline, but the additional comment, one that I didnt attend to prior to reading the book, which referred to unexpected twists and a riveting plotline was quite accurate. Repeatedly I found myself questioning which way the author was going to go, and leaving many things undone as I was compelled to read on and find out.

Kate Marshall is finally turning her life back on again after losing both her husband and son in a boating accident. She has moved halfway across the country for a fresh start, when a chance encounter with a familiar-looking boy asking for a poppysicle turned her life upside down. She turns to former Secret Service agent turned private investigator, Connor Sullivan, to help her decide is she is going crazy or if the impossible might just be possible. On the path to find the answer help comes from unexpected sources, and danger increases as does hope. Kate exemplifies what it means to trust and respect Gods sovereignty even when there is the possibility that it might contradict something about which you are passionate.

I thank Revell Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for providing Deceived for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Nothing could have prepared Kate Marshall for her chance encounter on a mall escalator . . . . nothing. How could the young boy going up; be her son? Her son allegedly died in a boating accident which also claimed the life of her husband, but Kevin's body was never recovered. Three years later, new job, new city, Kate is thrown into a whirlwind of emotion as she frantically searches for answers.

Former Secret Service agent Connor Sullivan is intrigued by Kate's story when she secures the help of his private investigation firm. If the little boy on the mall escalator was indeed Kate's son, then a horrendous crime has been committed. Who? Why? How? Those are the questions that must be answered. As Connor and Kate work closely together to pursue even the slimmest of leads, they both realize that this investigation could be the beginning of a lot more than the reuniting of a mother and son.

Irene Hannon crafts wonderful suspense-filled tales and "Deceived" is no exception. But, in spite of a strong story thread and engaging, interesting characters, the reading flow seemed a little too similar to some of her previous novels. However, it won't prevent me from reading future books. I am a fan for life!

Kate Marshall was having a normal day...well at least as normal as things have been since that awful day when she faced the man saying her beloved husband and young son will not be coming home. She was on her way out of the mall when she heard something familiar...she turned around and gasped...could that be her son? After she calls her son's name the boy turns and she sees a spark of recognition, she knows there is a crazy chance he's still alive. Despite the small amount of information she has to go on, and mall security and local police blowing her off, PI Connor Sullivan takes a leap of faith and dives head first into her case. She feels so grateful to him for believing in her case and seeing that she really isn't crazy...but does she feel something else for the "tall, dark, and handsome" PI? And will she ever see her dear son again despite the dangers?

There are very few things Connor Sullivan doesn't understand...but why he took this case and why he can't get Kate Marshall out of his head are the exception. He's never gotten personally involved on a case before but Kate's stubbornness and perseverance just draw him closer. As he draws further and further towards a line he does not want to cross, will his morals pull him back to safer ground or is he already caught in Kate's web? And if he is, does he want to be rescued?

    Why I liked it...

Deceived was an awesome book, more so then I could expect since I haven't read Irene Hannon before. Connor's caring, protective personality is what originally drew me in and as always I loved the chemistry between Kate and Conner but I don't think that is why I really liked the book. I think the main reason I loved this book was because of her characters and how they interacted with each other. The office scenes with Dev, Cal, Nikki, and Connor were great, especially the Dev/Nikki scenes. They really offered the bit of humor this book needed which perfected it. Another main reason I liked it is because, unlike some other novels part of a series, you don't have to read the first couple books to read "Deceived", it can be a very nice stand alone novel as I found out.

    Why I didn't like it...

The only thing that I really didn't care for about the book was that the story line was very similar to Colleen Coble's "Rock Harbor series". She also "lost" her husband and son but in a plane crash and she found her son might be alive in that series as well. That didn't hinder how much I like either book really, and they do have their differences, but I just kind of knew what was going to happen because of Coble's book. I loved this book despite that though and like I said...there were a lot of differences as well. If you like mysteries, either book is a must read!

I give Deceived four out of five stars!!

Why my rating is what it is...

I gave Deceived four out of five stars because for younger readers... the fires, shooting, killing, e.t.c that goes on is not very appropriate and because of the similarities Colleen and Irene had. All in all, it is a great book...go read it!!

Deceived, a novel by Irene Hannon

    Private Justice Series 3

Kate Marshalls life was turned upside-down when her husband and 4-year-old son didnt return from their fishing trip. Her husbands body was eventually recovered, but her sons was never found. And although Kate knew there were more questions than the police had answers for, the ruling was accidental drowning and the case was closed.

Three years later, Kate is living in St. Louis; she has rebuilt her life and is running a firm that helps abused women rebuild their lives. And then, while on a quick errand to the mall one noon, shes riding down the escalator and hears a little boy ask his Dad if they can stop for a poppysicle. Kate turns to look and sees a little boy with hair just like hers. She involuntarily calls Kevin and the boy looks directly at her, before his father pulls him close and disappears off the up escalator and into the crowd.

Connor, a former Secret Service Agent, joined his two buddies in their St. Louis P.I. firm when he realized he wanted more than an exciting career he also wanted a family and a life. When an attractive professional woman shows up in his office with an almost unbelievable story, his people-reading skills tell him to pursue the case.

Widower Greg and his 7 year old son have recently moved to St. Louis after living for three years in a remote location in Montana. Greg has a job with a construction company, has recently met a lady hes interested in and feels that life is finally looking up. But then, theres an odd encounter at the mall and his son starts having nightmares and asking questions. Greg begins to avoid his girlfriend for fear of what she might hear and fears that he may have to make more drastic choices to ensure the life he wants.

Deceived is a well-written story of a crime that almost went unpunished. While the events and reasons behind them that lead to the ending are dramatic and even shocking, much of the story depicts the ordinary a fathers love for his adopted son, a mothers love that never gives up. Also ordinary is the truth of a P.I.s life, consisting of many boring hours sitting in a car in the summer heat, waiting for one little clue, of hours spent searching through security footage, and then finally, the breakthrough that says keep going. Through all of those commonplace things, the suspense is maintained as we see both sides of the evolving story, and watch the developing relationship between Connor and Kate.

Ive enjoyed all three books of this trilogy. All were excellent as stand-alone stories, but why wouldnt you want to read them all?!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.
