Real people. Real sin. Transformed lives. A compilation of heartfelt letters written from a pastor to his people that explains Jesus' work on the cross.
Death by Love is a unique book on the cross of Jesus Christ. While many books debate the finer points of the doctrine of the atonement, what is often lost are the real-life implications of Jesus' death on the cross for those who have sinned and have been sinned against. Written in the form of pastoral letters, Death by Love outlines the twelve primary effects of Jesus' death on the cross and connects each to the life of a different individual.
Driscoll, one of America's most influential pastors, and Breshears, a respected theologian, help readers understand, appreciate, and trust in Jesus' work on the cross in a way that will transform their lives. Both deeply theological and intensely practical, this book shows how everyone can find hope through the death of Jesus Christ.
"This book is brutally honest about sin and suffering, and wonderfully hopeful as it points us to our true Savior."
Timothy S. Lane, Executive Director, Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation
"The stories portrayed in the chapters of this book are all too real, but more importantly, the pastoral responses offer riveting applications of the cross for true and lasting transformation."
Bruce A. Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Practical and powerful. It applies the sufficiency of Jesus to the real-life challenges we face in the church every day. If you work with hurting people you need Death by Love."
Dan Jarrell, Teaching Pastor, ChangePoint Church, Anchorage, Alaska
"A key reason for my confidence in this book is its brilliant presentation of the historic theology of the cross and how it defends reprehensible attacks against it."
Gregg R. Allison, Associate Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"The authors connect squarely with our ever-changing culture, declaring the central doctrine of Jesus' death and why it is important."
Bill Mounce, President, BiblicalTraining.org
Gerry Breshears is professor of theology and chairman of the division of biblical and theological studies at Western Seminary. Dr. Breshears has taught at numerous Bible colleges and seminaries around the world and is a frequent guest on various radio and TV programs
RyanSanta Rosa, CA4 Stars Out Of 5Death by Love by Mark DriscollMarch 29, 2011RyanSanta Rosa, CAQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Death by Love by Mark Driscoll is actually the first book of his that I have read. This book is a very real representation of the sin filled world that we live in, but also the power of the Gospel. Throughout this book, Mark shares the stories of those he has met as well as some from his church and how the message of the cross can deal with their sin or the sin that was done to them. Mark does not brush off their sin lightly. It is something that is very serious and he makes that clear. I believe that is one great thing about this book. There may be some that pick this book up that all of sudden have their own sin really brought to the surface so they can finally truly deal with it through the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. In the beginning of this book, Mark says this about what you will find in the chapters; "Each chapter includes a portrait of God, because to remain true all theology must begin and remain God-centered. Each chapter then proceeds to examine a biblical aspect of sin and a correlating effect of Jesus' death as the solution to the sin problem as dictated by God." Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears, who helps with supporting material at the end of each chapter, have written a book that encapsulates the Gospel. It really is the Good News of a God who loves us so much that He sent his one and only Son to shed his blood for our sins. It's also great to see that God laid this message onto the heart of a pastor. It really shows the heart of a man that loves God as well as the people that God has called him to serve.

He has the unique ability to make reformed theology practical and understandable. This book is very personal and real, and yet I do not find Driscoll's writing nearly as persuasive as his preaching. Although I listen to his sermons from Mars Hill weekly, this was my first attempt to read him. I will try another on his books soon, perhaps "Religion Saves."
Tom Harrington5 Stars Out Of 5December 16, 2008Tom HarringtonWonderful. It is wonderful to see a pastors heart at its best, dealing with truly difficult issues of life. Jesus really is the answer.
Dominick4 Stars Out Of 5October 16, 2008DominickI have to say, I just picked this book up yesterday and struggle to put it down. I am almost halfway through it and I get it. He does not beat around the bush or sugarcoat it. He speaks straight and honest(sometimes brutally) about sin it's effect and what Jesus and the cross means for us in our relationship with him as we seek to shake of the shackles of sin that have already fell away, despite our continued bondage. I don't know I am saying it eloquently enough. The format of him dealing with his flock in the form of letters is terrific and hope that he explores other issues in a second volume.
