"Sleiman launches an action-packed, historical series of adventure and romance, starring a strong, intelligent female Robin Hood who lives up to the famous outlaw's reputation. Valiant Hearts 1
By Dina L. Sleiman
Lady Merry Ellison is no more. Her father's attempt to dethrone King John failed - ending in the slaughter of her family and most of those living in the village that her father ruled. But Merry along with most of the children survived and Merry is determined to protect these young innocents no matter the cost.
But Merry and her young "band" must remain hidden because if word reached King John that the children of Ellsworth and the Baron's own daughter had escaped the slaughter they would be hunted down. But to survive they need to borrow and steal upon occasion, earning them notoriety as The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest.
But when Merry is spotted by the young man to whom she had been promised as a bride, life becomes suddenly much more complicated. Timothy Grey believing she's been held a prisoner is determined to save the young woman he thought dead these past two years.
Timothy is determined that Merry shall be safe, but the King's anger has yet to abate and Merry knows that Timothy's loyalty lies with the King. But when the heart is involved where does loyalty truly lie? This is the question that Timothy and Merry must work through if they are to have a future - whether together or separately.
Though marketed for the Juvenile / Young Adult market anyone who loves well-written historical fiction will enjoy this the first book in the Valiant Hearts series. If you enjoy Robin Hood give Merry Ellison and her band of ghosts chance to join your shelves, you'll enjoy the trip to 13th century England.
I was provided a copy this book by the publisher Bethany House through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

Merry Ellison used to be a Lady of high esteem until the day her father decided to go against the King's rules. Now she must protect all the children she is now in charge of. Timothy Grey is a man of the King, but in his heart he still misses the one girl he truly loved.
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I just wish I had enjoyed it more. I enjoyed the setting and the plot but for whatever reason I just couldn't seem to get into it. I enjoyed the character of Merry. I felt drawn to her strong protective nature. I enjoyed Dina's writing style, but just couldn't enjoy the book. I would like to read more by Dina to see if it may have just been this particular book. I will be trying again.
I received this book through the Book Club Network review program in exchange for my honest review. A positive review was not required.
jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5DauntlessJune 11, 2015jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Dauntless by Dina L. Sleiman entertains in a story of legend and history. A barons daughter, Lady Merry Ellison, has to make a new life for herself after her family is killed. Her fathers assassination attempt on the kings life failed, and her family paid with their lives and fortune. Merrys escape leaves her with nothing, and she has to use her wits and her skills to survive. It would have been easier for her had she not felt a burden for the orphaned village children whom she vows to protect and instruct. With only fleeting thoughts of regret over her childhood friend, Timothy Grey, the ninth child of the Baron of Greyham, she accepts her fate and willingly cares for the children. In another existence she and Timothy had felt an attraction that might have evolved into a lifetime of commitment but now her life is following a different direction. After her familys death she has denied the existence of God.
With no means of support or sustenance, Merry and her little band have resorted to a bit of thievery to exist. They use their hunting prowess to provide some food, but the rest has to be gleaned from their skill at stealing. These infrequent forays to acquire necessities have gained them the reputation of The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest and that has brought unwanted focus upon them.
Timothy Grey longs for a position and title and has gained employ as an assistant to the local earl. Unfortunately for him, he is handed the task of finding and eliminating these ghosts who are eluding the kings men. Naturally, his path crosses with that of former childhood friend, Merry, and her band of young people. The two are forced to face their past, their attraction to each other, and their values. Neither Merry nor Timothy realizes that they share a common enemy who seeks to destroy all of them because of his unfortunate life circumstances.
The author includes a Historical Notes section in which she explains the history of the time, the liberties that she has taken with history, and the plausible events that she has supplied. This is a very enjoyable tale for those who like the tales of Robin Hood and others who protect the innocent. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
Mrs ARS5 Stars Out Of 5YA with a PurposeMay 24, 2015Mrs ARSQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dauntless by author Dina Sleiman is a young adult read that has a lot to offer for teens and adults. In this ever popular genre, Dauntless doles out just what is popular like a strong heroine, a possible love triangle, true love, plenty of angst, and even a type of dystopian novel. Taking place during the medieval ages our heroine Merry is a type of Robin Hood character only different. Having been forced from her home due to a corrupt king, Merry and her band called The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest have learned to survive unseen. However when an old friend, Timothy Grey who has long thought her dead, identifies her, loyalties are questioned and love becomes a test. This is a time where you know the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good. Add a touch of supernatural and you have the makings of a most engrossing read. I highly recommend this to teens and adults and I look forward to reading the second in the series. I received a copy of this book for an honest review from The Book Club Network, (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

Dina L. Sleiman has written an exciting book. Dauntless is filled with daring rescues, skilful exploits, deadly death traps and very evil enemies. All Merry is trying to do is keep the orphans feed, clothed and housed. It does take money so Merry steals it from the Prince. This action puts a price on her head. Medieval swords and gallantry that I havent read in quite a while and it is nice to have it back. Get ready for an exciting suspense ride as Dauntless is a thriller, which simply means that everyones lives are in danger from practically page one. The lead characters are terrific and you root for them as you live through their various heart-throbbing encounters flipping the pages as fast as you can read. Ms. Sleiman does a truly remarkable job in this book while exciting us with this story that everyone will enjoy. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.
