James Lund is an award-winning author. He is the coauthor of A Dangerous Faith. Three of Jim's projects won the ECPA Gold Medallion award while he was an editor and writer at Multnomah Publishers. Jim made extensive writing contributions to books such as James and Shirley Dobson's Night Light and Night Light for Parents and Randy Alcorn's The Treasure Principle. He and his family live in Oregon.
Danger Calling has two main points: first, to make readers realize that danger is a part of life, so having basic survival skills is vital; second, to recognize that danger has a way of making people listen to God. The book consists of sixteen stories with questions. Jackson is a regular adventurer and outdoorsman and Lund is an award winning writer, which provides the best of both worlds when it comes to this book.
The biblical undercurrent of this books messages is to be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deut. 31:6). Danger is part of life; we never know when we will be in a situation wherein we might die. But God is with us no matter how bad things might seem, and he will give us the confidence to do whatever is necessary to survive.
Danger Calling a great book for personal use or group devotional time. The book is strong in all areas and flows nicely. I see ages 12 and older benefiting from this book, so I strongly recommend it. Isaac Hamlin, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
IreneUnited States5 Stars Out Of 5I loved the adventures!March 21, 2012IreneUnited StatesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Danger Calling, True Adventures of Risk and Faith, is written by Peb Jackson and James Lund. This book would be great for a Sunday School Class or Bible study with teen boys. Anyone who reads and works through the questions in this book will enjoy and learn from it but I just feel it would be perfect for that age group. I loved the adventures and especially how the authors helped you really delve into the stories by asking questions at the end of each story. The last section in each chapter is called "Hitting the Trail" and is meant for personal reflection. If you take the time to work through those questions the book will really take on more meaning. I really liked this book and think it would be a great present for any young man to get so he can use it for his personal Bible study or with a group of other young men.
I would like to thank Christianreviewofbooks.com for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based solely on my opinion of what I read.
JamesMass.Age: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5fast paced and thought provokingFebruary 6, 2012JamesMass.Age: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is made up of 16 short stories divided into four sections each having a main theme. Section one is named "Sacrifice", section two ""Perseverance", section three "Courage", and section four "Leadership".
The book is fast paced and thought provoking, written in an easy to read and vivid style that helps you to see in your mind the beauty and danger in each story. The stories ranged from mountain climbing expeditions to sea voyages and even military operations. They spanned in date from around 1914 all the way up to around 2008.
The book is set up with questions and reflections at the end of each story (It seems like everyone is doing this kind of thing now a days.). I usually don't read the questions at the end of each chapter in books like this that are set up for small group study but I found that many (not all) of the questions were challenging and helpful in some way.
Some of the stories that are contained in this book are well known and you may have already read or watched a movie or documentary giving a fuller account of the story but even if this is true the stories are well worth reading again.
What I did notice, and this is true of a lot of books like this, is that the scriptures given are sometimes pulled out of context or stretched to fit the stories better. This is a failure in my opinion. It's far better to just not quote scripture than to stretch the text but the stories and questions (most of the questions) aren't really based in any text of scripture so it was easy for me to just ignore those things that seemed a bit forced. I always say "reading a book is like eating fish. Eat the meat and spit out the bones".
In the end this was a great book easy to read and really quite thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone.
