Bean76San Antonio, TXAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A delightful little bookMarch 3, 2012Bean76San Antonio, TXAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Out of the Spin Cycle by Jen Hatmaker is a sweet little read that I'm sure all moms of all ages and experience will find a delight to read. This 40-day devotional book is full of delicious nuggets of wisdom that will help any mom feel more appreciated and understood, as well as come closer to Jesus Christ daily.
Jen Hatmaker speaks very candidly and honestly about what it's really like to be a mom. She addresses several subjects, including comparing yourself to other moms, feeling like you have to be supermommy, and struggling with being unappreciated in your home. Her candid style brings lots of humor, grace, and love to this book.
Julie Ritter5 Stars Out Of 5June 25, 2010Julie RitterI love this book! Jen Hatmaker is a funny author but she relates her stories to bible truths and questions to think about. My absolute favorite was half-filled bag of Doritoes. After reading it the night before and praying on giving more of my attention and myself to my children throughout the day (not to be like the half-filled bag of Doritoes---you know when you open the bag an it's filled with more air than chips), the following day I kept that thought in my heart and really spent time with my children. I will be buying more Jen Hatmaker books!
Christy Lockstein5 Stars Out Of 5June 17, 2010Christy LocksteinOut of the Spin Cycle by Jen Hatmaker is a espresso shot of encouragement for Christian moms trying to get it all right. Hatmaker has kept each chapter short, no more than two or three pages, so even the busiest mom can squeeze in reading a chapter a day. The chapters are filled with humorous anecdotes about her own children (Gavin sounds like a hoot!) as well as hilarious and heartwarming stories of motherhood from others. Each one encourages readers to let go of trying to be perfect and to trust God for the strength to get through each day. Sitting down to read this book each night felt like sitting down for a cup of coffee with a good friend who is glad to listen to your tales of woe and then offer the perfect advice to soothe your worried soul. She reminds us that no one is going to get everything exactly right, but we need to focus on the important things: teaching our children about Jesus and to love our neighbors. The book is a perfect gift for a mom-to-be or a mom with lots of experience. Both will find encouragement and a good laugh from a terrific author who has been there.
TrenchMommyUSAAge: 25-34Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5June 14, 2010TrenchMommyUSAAge: 25-34Gender: femaleLighthearted. Funny. Occasionally hysterical. Encouraging. Comforting. These are a few words I would use to describe this book by Jen Hatmaker. You will truly feel like you are taking a break from the "spin cycle" when you take time to read one of the many short chapters in this book.As expected in a devotional, the chapters are short (mostly 2 pages) and are encouraging with an impacting message held in each one. Jen's stories were real and easy to relate to making you feel like you are having a good laugh with a friend. The main focus is motherhood and these 40 thoughts are great for any mother of younger children (Newborn to Jr. High). The only reason this book did not get 4 stars in my opinion is that while containing a biblical perspective through the book, it did not always have scripture for each devotional thought. I personally would call this an encouragement book rather than devotional book. However, while I wouldn't use this for my daily time with God, I do think it makes for a great mid-morning, lunch time, or nap time pick-me-up that will bring both laughter and learning to your day.* * * * *Available June 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
