Finding a good math curriculum for my oldest has been a challenge but MCP's math seems to have finally be the one.
Although she is technically in the 5th grade, she was only able to test between a 1st & 2nd grade math level in the public schools.
Now that we are homeschooling and she is receiving one-on-one instruction, she is slowly gaining ground. We started off the school year with another 1st grade curriculum (not sold here at CBD) and were able to skip the 2nd grade curriculum and go straight to the 3rd grade MCP math.
MCP is a mastery approach and there are quite a few problems on each page. We found that by skipping some of the problems, it is not overwhelming. Also, we can go back to the skipped problems for additional review. The pages are very plain which helps to keep her from being distracted. The teacher guide has been helpful to pinpoint common mistakes and correct those mistakes.

We used Horizons for K, 1, and part of 2, but it started to move too fast and my son could not keep up. It was very frustrating for both of us. I tried Math-U-See and that did not work either. I tried Saxon Math 3 and that was good for the most part but it was so tedious and monotonous. As a last ditch effort, I reluctantly ordered this math from MCP. It looks really dry to me, but my son is doing well with it. The teacher's manual is good but not as good as Saxon's. (I got spoiled by having everything scripted for me.) I consider the teacher's manual a necessity if you want to successfully get the most out of the book. Some of it is confusing to me but hey it's working for my son and that's the most important thing.
