This short book can provoke some introspection, and it has good insights into the four cups in the seder. It is somewhat general, but it does point out good concepts and refer to useful Bible verses. However, it seems like a pep talk, and there is some focus on self, and getting the most out of Gods promises for your life. To me, it seems to skim the surface, and does not read like an in-depth Bible study, which is what I expected.

Four Cups is another good book by Chris Hodges and I found it to be as good as his first book, which I read last summer. In this book, the author uses traditional Jewish history to explain the four stages of faith. The author explained that God has a purpose for every Christian and that He longs to rescue us from bondage, deliver us from the things that hold us back from fulfilling our purpose, show us what His purpose is for each of us, and to feel part of a family where we have a specific job to do for Him. The author explains these concepts using the four cups that Jewish families drink during their Seder at Passover and the significance not only for Jewish families but also for Christians. What I really enjoyed about the book is how the author incorporated many scriptural verses in each chapter to give meaning to what he was trying to explain and how each chapter ended with a prayer. I found the prayers to be very meaningful and as an essential first step to growing closer to God. I was impressed with the author's second book and I came away with not only a better understanding of my own purpose, but also the history of Passover and its importance to a Christian.

Four Cups: God's Timeless Promises For A Life Of Fulfillment, written by Chris Hodges, is a book that strives to demonstrate to its readers that God has had a plan for their lives since the very beginning.

Life always seems to be found somewhere on the plane of interesting. There are many curves, many decisions and many opinions to be heard, thus making it, at times, difficult to understand what path to choose. This publication by Chris Hodges strives to help Christians choose the right path, the path that God had ordained for their lives from the very beginning.

The book begins by taking its readers on a journey back into the Old Testament, back to the point where the nation of Israel was enslaved in Egypt, back to the point where God makes four powerful promises to His people. These four promises are found in Exodus 6:6-7.

God promised His people that He would free them from their oppression, rescue them from slavery, redeem them with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment, and claim them as His own people. These are the promises to the nation of Israel, but they are also present for all Christians, for all people who call upon the name of The Lord, for all who are willing to be cleansed by the shed blood of Jesus.

Pastor Chris does a phenomenal job displaying the truth behind these promises for the nation of Israel, but he also carries their truth through time into our own lives today, helping us understand what they mean to us now, what they mean to our relationship with God.

This publication is a must read, as if brings about a deeper thought process, a deeper understanding of what it means to be a follower of God.

"Four Cups...." provides an short overview of the four cups of promise in the Jewish Passover and the author expands upon each cup with the ultimate purpose of helping believers "live the unlived life within us."

There a few things I liked about this book and a few that I did not like.

First, I appreciated Hodges' emphasis on the community of believers over and against the solo life of faith. Second, I absolutely loved his definition of success as "when people are moving from where they are to where God wants them to be." Third, Hodges' explanation of the discipleship process is helpful. Finally, I found his use of Scripture throughout this short book refreshing.

However, there are a few things about this book that were unappealing. First, Hodges speaks of God "see{ing} every person on earth as his child, though some are still lost." This statement clearly has no biblical support, making his mention of Luke 19:10 a horrible use of proof-texting, and a bad example at that. Second, there is an unwise focus on self, seen especially in these words: "My bucket list reminds me that living out my dreams is the secret to happiness." Finally, the author's reference to American psychologist Abraham Maslow's "hierarchy of needs" is unhelpful and confusing. This is verified by the lack of a single verse of Scripture during this discussion.

I found this book somewhat informative insofar as the discussion of the meaning of each of the seder cups is concerned. However, nothing in this book caused me to give contemplation about what God would have me to do in response to this book's insights.

NOTE: I received this book for free from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for a review. I was under no obligation to provide a favorable review and the thoughts and words expressed are my own.

    FOUR CUPS

God's Timeless Promises for a Life of Fulfillment

    By Chris Hodges

The Four Cups is about the cups, the four promises, of the Passover meal that the Israelites ate the night before the Exodus from Egypt. The book discusses how these Four Cups continue to be important as God's promises to us in the New Testament.

    A quote from the book:

God wants to rescue you from bondage.

He wants to deliver you from whatever holds you back.

He wants you to discover his original intention for your life.

And he wants you to be a part of a family that makes a difference.

The Four Cups are the cup of sanctification, the cup of deliverance, the cup of redemption, and the cup of promises. Chris explains the promises and the freedom through Jesus Christ that God promises us. He devotes a chapter to each of the Four Cups and how they are needed today. He offers scripture verses and a prayer at the end of each chapter.

The book is not long and can be read is a short time, easy to understand and he offers in the last chapter, to church leaders and group leaders, a way to use the information for Bible studies or other worship services. I found the book to be very informative and worth the time to read and will make you stop and think about your walk with Jesus Christ.

I received this book free from the Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255
