Yes, you read it correctly. Cupidity is the book written by husband and wife team, Michael and Hayley DiMarco. They share fifty stupid things people do for love. These acts are broken into groups: emotional, mental (gender-specific), physical, social, and finally spiritual acts of cupidity. Within each group, the DiMarcos show scripturally how each act of cupidity is recipe for disaster, though if spotted and addressed can be repaired. They convey their message with humor and a conversational tone, which will draw the reader into each chapter. You find yourself laughing at your own goofy behavior one page, then repenting for the unloving way you handled the situation on the next.This book is great for the couple who has been married for years and perhaps wondering what happened to the spark they once knew. It is also perfect for the young adult who is hoping that the one shows up knocking at their door today so they can move on with life. The advice given comes from two people who have walked paths that led to cupidity and know of which they speak. So jump in, take the cupidity test. Will you pass? Fail? I had the great joy of reading Michael & Hayley DiMarco's Cupidity. They're the perpetrators (& I used that word intentionally!) of the Babble of the Sexes website which they describe as a scattered conversation of a spiritual and/or humorous nature about life, love, and books. The book's divided into 5 sections:1. Emotional Acts of Cupidity2. Mental (Gender-Specific) Acts " " 3. Physical Acts " "4. Social Acts " "5. Spiritual Acts " "Cupidity # 1 (of 50) is Believing Love is a Feeling. We all start out with an emotional high when we first fall in love. Those feelings will inevitably diminish over time. Thank God for that; it can be exhausting to live all of your life with that intensity! The DiMarcos offer this advice:So, lets just say, enjoy the feelings of love when it comes, but know that love doesnt have to feel good in order to exist. Consider Christ on the cross. Certainly, this perfect act of love didnt give him the amazing feeling that we associate with true love. In Christs life, love hurt, to put it mildly. But thank God he knew the hurt that had be endured in order for love to become available to all of us (p. 15).One act of Cupidity to which we can all succumb is # 44: Expecting Another Person to Bring You Hope, Joy or Peace. Here are the DiMarcos:When you put your hope solely in the hands of another person, you are sure to be disappointed. That isnt because there is no hope but because your hope is to be somewhere else. And when your hope is heavenly focused instead of humanly focused, you have all the hope you need (Romans 15:4) (p. 214) The advice is biblically based; there's a lot of scripture interspersed throughout. It's valuable to both singles & marrieds, men & women. I plan on keeping it on my nightstand to remind me to be careful to not commit any acts of Cupidity! This is not the type of book I would normally be seen walking around with trust me. Most books on relationships are just so tainted, if not entirely consisting of worldly views that I wouldnt bother reading them. This book caught me by surprise. I knew the moment I started reaching for the hi-liter that I was in trouble. Nothing serious mind you, I just needed to note a few things on occasion.cover-to-cover. Of course, Hayley and Michael DiMarco have been around, authoring over 30 books, many award-winning bestsellers, so I guess I should have expected something useful. Still, its a book on relationships, and real men just dont read this stuff, theres no need, right?Wrong! Cupidity is about the most biblical book on relationships Ive seen in some time. Then again, as I mentioned, I dont read this kind of thing often.In modern, very matter-of-fact, Im-in-your-face-because-I-love-you-brethren language, both Michael and Haley write what they think, to the glory of God, and I like thata lot. Both authors apparently have a tremendous sense of humor which certainly doesnt hurt, and it shows in their writing. The book is filled with scriptural references and how their applications are displayed in biblical, God-glorifying, loving relationships.The only negative thing I can think of about the book Cupidity is that, in certain areas of my own relationship with my wife, the book keeps calling me stupid.but theyre right. I hate that.This book is a real gem. It is a biblical, frank and a very humorous look at love in a relationship, and the revelation of some surprising things that God has to say about them.I may actually read this book again, but this time, without the hi-liter!Note: This book was made available to me for review by Tyndale at no cost.
