wooden ones are better
Having used both the plastic and the wooden ones I would recommend spending a little more and getting the wooden ones if you want your child to really enjoy using them. The feel of wood is a pleasure. The feel of plastic is not the same experience.

My girls love using these rods for math, along with some great videos we found online. I can see them being very useful for teaching difficult math concepts as they get older.

I bought these to use with the Miquon workbooks. My 3 year old loves them! Great product for young children to learn how numbers interact.

These are perfect for the classroom usage, but I thought they would come with one side marked for "ones" and they did not.
