Daniel Darling, provided me a complementary copy of his new book called, Crash Course, forming a faith foundation for life.Although my kids are well beyond the teen years, I wish I could have given them this devotional when they were kids. Although written for the teen in mind, I was encouraged and learned a lot through the short two page devotionals. Each devotional includes a short story or insight on a particular subject. Daniel then includes a 'Bottom Line' statement that encapsulates the major theme. His 'Own It' suggestion includes a small, but doable project from reading a passage to watching a movie that reinforces the theme. He also adds a simple prayer and a verse of the day.In 100 days, the reader will understand what it means to be a follower of Christ in these five areas.-Doctrine-knowing what you believe and why-Decisions-how to make good choices-Direction-what should I do with my life?-Devotion-Staying true in a world of lies-Delight-finding joy in a hard worldI highly encourage parents and student leaders to get a box of these books and get them in the hands of teens.Daniel also wrote Teen People of the Bible.

"Crash Course" is a 100 day devotional aimed at teenagers, but it's written simply enough that ages 8-18 would all get something out of it. It's written in a conversational tone and was easy to understand. The author gave one or two Bible verses, then a very brief illustrative story and an explanation of the day's concept based on those verses. He then suggested other resources for in-depth study (like other Bible verses to look up or another book or website or YouTube video on the subject).Though each day's lesson was brief, his explanation was clear, concise, and covered the most important points. The lessons usually built on each other and were Bible-based.Section One covered subjects like God, Christ, Holy Spirit, the Trinity, the Bible, Creation, Sin, Satan, Heaven, Hell, Baptism, Communion. His explanations were consistent with what most Protestant denominations teach. If there is some conflict in teachings (like the when of Rapture), he mentioned that before he explained what he believes.Section Two covered subjects like God knows everything about you, cares for you, intends good toward you, wants you to show love toward others, and how to determine God's will for your life.Section Three covered making decisions--by seeking God, who do you ask for advice, who influences your decisions, deciding on friends, dating, your future job, how to spend your money, etc.Section Four covered making your faith your own, how to overcome temptation and sin, and how to grow and help others grow in their faith.Section Five covered handling changes and sorrow, forgiveness, the source of happiness, getting you focus right, etc.Overall, I'd highly recommend this devotional to youth, especially to those who might not have a firm foundational understanding in these areas.I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

I found this to be a good devotional for teens. It has a simple format and layout (usually about 1-2 verses to probe each day, along with a simple thought and one challenge question or thought). Darling writes with a direct style. He asks some good, sometimes "in-your-face" questions. Here are a few examples: what does God think about my life? in what ways is God calling me to give my life for the good of others? God raising me to be a difference-maker? (the answer that is expected is "Yes" but then ask "How so?")Darling will make a teen think doctrinally. It's difficult to go deep in just one or two pages, but it will make them begin exploring. The author provides several main division to help the reader go through several areas of doctrine and life together:Doctrine: Knowing what you believe and whyHow to Make Good Choices: based on who you are in ChristWhat Should I Do With My Life?: Seeking God's Will (I found Darling's 90/10 rule very helpful)Staying True In A World of Lies: maintaining purity & not compromisingFinding Joy In A Hard World: living in the midst of hardship & trialsWhen I served as a youth pastor, I would have loved for there to have been a substantive devotional guide such as Crash Course. Now there is and I highly recommend it.This book was provided by New Hope Publishers free of charge and for review purposes.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Daniel Darling
Located in: Chicago Suburbs
Submitted: August 24, 2010

Tell us a little about yourself.  Daniel Darling is the Senior Pastor of Gages Lake Bible Church in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and is the author of Teen People of the Bible, Crash Course, and iFaith (2011). His work has been featured in evangelical publications such as Focus on the Family, Marriage Partnership, Pray!, Stand Firm, In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley. His op-eds have appeared in Newsweek/Washington Posts’ On Faith section and other newspapers and opinion sites. He has been profiled by The Chicago Tribune. Daniel is a contributing writer to Zondervan’s Couples Devotional Bible.

Dan’s columns appear weekly at and monthly for the local Lake County Journals. Dan has been interviewed on TV and radio outlets across the country, including, Steve Brown, etc, Moody Broadcasting Network, Harvest Television, The Sandy Rios Show, American Family Radio, and many others.

Daniel has a bachelor’s degree in pastoral ministry from Dayspring Bible College. He traveled extensively to India and the Middle East. He and his wife, Angela, have two daughters and a son and reside in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

What was your motivation behind this project?  My desire is to see young people really connect with God's purpose for their lives. God's will is not for young people to drift and wander, but to engage in God's mission around the world by knowing what they believe, why they believe it, what God is saying to them, and how to make choices that move them farther along in their pre-ordained purpose.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  This book is really a comprehensive walk through the five most important areas of a young person's life. If a teen will just read one devotional a day, by 100 days, they will have a good grasp of solid Bible doctrine, Biblical tools for making choices, help for hard times, and a set of boundaries that will guide them through life.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  What struck me is just how much God loves every person and that if they can connect with God's love and purpose for them--if they can grab a hold of who they are in Jesus, and who He wants them to be, they can really change the world.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I read a wide variety of authors and listen on podcast to a wide variety of preachers. I love the work of Randy Alcorn. I'm liking Tullian Tchivigan. I've always loved Josh Harris' books and preaching. Francis Chan is always stimulating and challenging. As far as pure wordsmiths, nobody is better than Phil Yancey or Max Lucado. Then I listen to guys like Tim Keller, Tommy Nelson, David Jeremiah, Michael Easley, Erwin Lutzer, Ray Pritchard.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I'm also the senior pastor of Gages Lake Bible Church, a wonderful group of godly people here in the northern suburbs of Chicago. I have a wife, Angela and three beautiful children, Grace, Dan Jr, and Emma Rose.
