Product Description

Blood of a Prodigal
When an Amish or "plain" boy is kidnapped, Bishop Eli Miller reluctantly seeks help from outsiders, the "vain ones" known as English. Pastor Caleb Troyer and Professor Michael Branden, boyhood friends and lifelong residents of the county the Amish and English share, understand better than anyone that the bishop would not have enlisted their help unless it were a matter of gravest concern, and they began searching for the boy under the bishop's mysterious strictures, knowing that the tenuous bonds of trust he has forged with them can easily be broken.

Broken English
At the center of this mystery is a man called David Hawkins. Trained by the U.S. military to kill, the "English" outsider came to the quiet town of Millersburg and found salvation among the pacifist Amish. But Hawkin's fragile tranquility is shattered when a marauding ex-convict descends on Millersburg, unleashing a wave of violence whose casualties include an investigative journalist and Hawkins' only daughter.

Publisher's Description

A P. L. Gaus omnibus edition, combining his first two novels, Blood of the Prodigal and Broken English.

In Blood of the Prodigal, Jonah Miller, shunned by his Old Order sect of the Amish and cast into the wider world, decides to kidnap his ten-year-old son from the home of the bishop who had exiled Miller a decade earlier. In his desperation to retrieve the boy, the bishop appeals for help to the only “English” men that his sect would ever approve. Professor Michael Branden and Pastor Caleb Troyer had been looking forward to the kind of sleepy rural summer they had enjoyed as boyhood friends growing up in the small college town of Millersburg. Instead, they plunge into the normally closed Amish culture to find the boy. When the kidnapping leads to murder, Branden’s friend Sheriff Bruce Robertson enters the investigation. Branden digs through the past to uncover truths that many would prefer to leave undisturbed. Little does he suspect that even the anguished bishop, torn by an insoluble moral dilemma, tragically does not tell everything he knows about the case. P. L. Gaus depicts a culture that successfully stands outside the mainstream, yet is every bit as susceptible to the undertow of the human spirit as any we might know.

In Broken English, Professor Michael Branden, Sheriff Bruce Robertson, and Pastor Caleb Troyer (series regulars in P. L. Gaus’s Amish mysteries) are faced with a moral and legal conundrum. The peaceful town of Millersburg, Ohio, in the heart of Ohio’s Amish country, is rocked by the vicious murder of one of its citizens at the hands of an itinerant ex-convict. When a local reporter covering the story ends up dead as well, with the convict already behind bars, suspicion falls on David Hawkins, father of the first victim. But Hawkins is nowhere to be found, not even among the protective Amish colony that had taken him in as one of its own regardless of his shadowy past. As Broken English unfolds, circumstances and the search for justice test the mettle of the closest of friends and reveal the desperate measures of the strongest of foes.

Author Bio
