Product Description

The spiritual writings of the fifth century eremite, Mark the Ascetic (or Mark the Monk), were deeply valued among Byzantine ascetics. Equally rich in theological insight and historical interest, these spiritual counsels circulated widely during the Reformation period and were read by Lutheran divines in addition to Roman theologians. So loved were his counsels, a fourteenth century manuscript proclaimed a slogan often repeated by monastics and ascetics alike: "Sell everything and buy Mark."

His words on taking responsibility for one another out of love, his practical advice on the need for repentance, and his strident emphasis on the kind of unity evident in Christ directly relate to modern Christians and may provide a useful point of departure for ecumenical dialogue.
