Having read the first book in this series, I was very eager to see the story of Jessilyn, Luke and Gemma continued. This book delivered! It was so captivating I could hardly put it down for a minute. Christianity is portrayed so powerfully, in different ways. I can't wait to read the next one.

This very entertaining and page-turning novel is the second by Ms. Valent. This is the sequel to Fireflies in December, which won the 2007 Christian Writers Guild Operation First Novel contest. The book, which has been compared favorably to Harper Lees classic, To Kill A Mockingbird, is set in the South in 1936. The main storyline centers on Jessilyn Lassiter and Gemma Teague. Jessie, 17, and Gemma, 19, have been friends since they were little girls. Jessies parents brought Gemma into their home after her parents perished in a house fire four years prior to the events of this novel. This novel picks up the story of the girls and their lives.This novel transports you to the South during the Depression, complete with vivid descriptions of the landscape, and the dialogue is written very accurately. Ms. Valent is a native southerner, and does a marvelous job of translating that unique way of life to the reader. As a native Michigander, I have visited the South since I was a child and consider it to be my second home! This novel is appealing to me for that reason. There are some intriguing subplots - including a death and a false accusation which are handled very expertly by Ms. Valent. And Jessie still has a crush on her friend Luke Talley. Luke is finally starting to realize she is no longer a little girl. Their relationship is sweet and authentic. I also enjoyed seeing Jessie grow closer to making a decision for the Lord.I really enjoyed this novel. I may have to read Fireflies in December, before Ms. Valent brings the characters back to life again. Her third novel is called Catching Moondrops and will be released in the Fall of 2010. I look forward to seeing how the lives of Jessie, Gemma and Luke continue to interact and where Jessie and Lukes relationship evolves! At first I hesitated to accept this complimentary copy of "Cottonwood Whispers" from Tyndale House Publishers for review. It's a sequel, and I haven't read the first book. But that wasn't a problem. Author Jennifer Erin Valent subtly refers to the previous story from time to time while keeping this story fully self-contained. I appreciated that! I wasn't confused and didn't feel I'd missed anything. I just enjoyed reading a well-written story about a 17-year-old girl who finds herself caught in the middle of a serious community crisis.The story is set in the South in 1936. Jessilyn Lassiter lives with her parents and adopted sister/best friend Gemma Teague. She also has a crush on the boy-next-door who's really a man in his early 20's trying to decide if Jessilyn has grown up enough for him yet or not. When a three-year-old neighbor is hit by a car and dies, an innocent man is charged with the crime. Jessilyn and Gemma struggle to bring truth to light without bringing harm to their family."Cottonwood Whispers" is a coming of age story full of strong characters, deep emotions, and a surprising storyline. Woven carefully throughout is a message of God's faithful presence and sovereignty. If you enjoy reading novels, I recommend this one.

Valent grabbed me from the get-go and drew me deep into her story. I felt like I could walk out the door and touch the world the author had painted in my mind.It is a coming of age story, twisted with the racial wars of the 1930's. It shows us the evil inside of us and the blind rage that misguides our judgements in situations.Gemma Teague says at the beginning of the book that change doesn't come when we expect it and it is never easy, but it comes all the same. I think Valent shows this throughout the book. As faith grows and changes our mind changes.Valent doesn't sugar coat much in this book, which I appreciate. It leaves you wondering about the strength of the characters and how their paths are directed towards God. Jessilyn and Luke are not Christians in this book and they ask some really tough questions that I think we have all asked ourselves at some point in our lives. I loved Jessilyn's sassy personality. It drove me to laughter one moment and tears the next -- probably because I can relate to not controlling my tongue as often as I should! I was moved to tears by the end and am left with a that silent wow. I wasn't expecting this book to touch me.I will mention that the romance in this is clean and I wouldn't call it the main story either -- more of the secondary plot. I thought it was well rounded and covered a lot of subjects that aren't easy to tackle such as racism, God's will, and the rage that dwells inside of us when we've been wounded. I loved that she left room for the next book and I can't wait to see what Valent comes up next in "Catching Moondrops"I would definitely recommend this book!Thank-you to Tyndale House Publishers for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
