Publisher's Weekly

Sloane Templeton inherits a Brooklyn bookstore after her mother dies, a bookstore that’s in the sights of a realty company that would love to add the land to a development project. Sloane’s urbane psychiatrist boyfriend is an improvement over her ex, a gangbanger type. Her aunt Verlene is a cooking show run amok. Not long after Sloane refuses the offer to sell the store, bad things start happening on her store’s computers, and she must deal with a rare book worth a million dollars. A lot of ingredients get thrown into Calhoun’s plot pot. Her mashup of comedy, urban fiction, romance, and suspense doesn’t hang together, and some of the comedy is juvenile (boogers, anyone?). On the plus side, Sloane Templeton is a fierce, sometimes funny voice. Harder editing would better channel it. Agent: Terry Burns. (Apr.) 2012 Reed Business Information

Readers are thrown headfirst into an imaginative mystery when they open the pages of Bonnie S. Calhoun's debut novel, Cooking the Books. Her main character, Sloane Templeton, used to work in a Cyber Crimes Unit investigating computer forensics. She decided to give up that life when she inherited her mother's bookstore. Now she works hard to juggle looking after her eccentric aunt and her zany customers. But the real mystery begins when Sloane starts getting cyber threats.

Things keep getting worse for Sloane as the story progresses. The threatening emails and messages on her work computers are easy to ignore. Her abusive ex-boyfriend, Trey, is not. Sloane wonders if it's safe for her to continue dating the stunningly handsome Andreas. Aunt Verline and the bookstore manager, Fifi, contribute a lot to the story while attempting to keep Sloan out of trouble. The real uniting feature among the female characters is their lack of respect from the men in their lives. Verbal and physical abuse unites them. Sloane and her lady companions grow as the novel progresses, and they learn to look at themselves as "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139: 14).

For a first novel, Bonnie S. Calhoun has woven an admirable tale. Cooking the Books, with its quirky characters and twisting plot, would be best enjoyed by women who are interested in urban mysteries. It is by no means limited to that crowd though. This reader would recommend it to avid cozy mystery fans and Christian readers looking for a light enjoyable book. Katelyn S. Irons, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Not my type of book. I had to push myself to keep reading and as the book went on I found most incidents quite unbelievable. I also didn't see the main character showing signs of being a Christian although near the end she did send up some emergency prayers.

Bonnie Calhoun writes a delightful novel filled with real people and real life. Sloane Templeton has inherited a book store with a zany manager. Calhoun's characters are a hoot! An example: the group of wacky senior citizens that meets in her bookstore but they don't read the books. When Sloane receives life-threatening messages on her computer the police become involved and Sloane tries to keep the incident a secret, which is impossible. With each page you wonder what will happen next to complicate Sloane's life. Calhoun writes thick tension but breaks it up with her lovable characters and their zany ways. The reader knows the criminal threat is dangerous, but enough laugh out loud moments keep the story from dragging. There is no sagging middle to this story. Highly recommended.

Fun book to read as it infuses humor while weaving a tale of mystery and self-discovery. The author uses interesting character self-talk to provide insight to the main character's, Sloane, mindset at tense moments in the book. While some might view these self-talk segments as somewhat snarky, I found them to be an amusing take on what and how most people surely think to themselves on a daily basis. The references to red velvet cake also had me laughing as I completely identified with indulging in the wonderful treat and always finding ways or occasions to do so!

Just when you think you've figured out who is behind all the threats in Sloane's life, the author throws in another twist or comment from a supporting character that has you guessing again until the end.

Overall a good book written with self-discovery, faith, suspense and the importance of love and support of family and friends.

An enjoyable light read, not great literature but pleasant escapism.

Author: Bonnie S. Calhoun

Tell us a little about yourself.  Bonnie S. Calhoun is the publisher of ChristianFictionOnlineMagazine.com. She is also the Northeast Zone Director for American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW), the Vice President of Christian Authors Network (CAN), and the Appointment Coordinator for both the Colorado Christian Writers Conference and the Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference. In her day life she is a seamstress and clothing designer, and conference speaker for writing techniques and website and social media design.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Entertaining an audience of readers, and showing how the human spirit can triumph over all odds when we lean on the Lord.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  A stronger spirit and the knowledge that we can do all things thru Christ who strengthens us.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I think once you get a story on paper and it is complete, it lets you release the burden that you had for that particular cause.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Since I write suspense, that is also my favorite genre to read. Some of my favorites, not in any particular order, and not a complete list by any means are: Brandilyn Collins, Terri Blackstock, Robert Liparulo, James Scott Bell, Randy Ingermanson, Eric Wilson, and Bill Myers.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Everyone has a story!
