"In 20 Controversies That Almost Killed a Church, author Richard L. Ganz breaks down 1 Corinthians into twenty topics addressed by the apostle Paul almost 2,000 years ago, and advises contemporary believers on ways to avoid those same traps. Each chapter reviews a section of the letter, providing cross references, application, and current examples for insight. In the section about church discipline, he writes: 'Our society has been distancing its morality from the Word of God in recent times, but that is not a new occurrence in history. Even the Corinthian church, centuries ago, had problems of immorality…Redeemed sinners, to remain in the church, must live holy lives. This does not mean that they do not sin, but it means that when they do sin, they confess their sins to God and strive even more for that holiness…'
"Ganz has made this book very readable and accessible to anyone interested in understanding God’s word. In addition to the twenty topics, the book includes a complete index of scriptures referenced within, and a thoughtful discussion guide for book clubs or study guides. 20 Controversies That Almost Killed a Church is great as an added reference for a Bible study, or as a standalone study into pressures of the Christian life and how we are to respond." -- Stacy Oliver, Christian Book Previews

If Paul were to write an epistle to the typical twenty-first century church, what would he say? Dr. Ganz finds the answer in Paul's first letter to the Corinthian church, as they faced many of the same issues that churches today face. This book's 20 chapters are doctrinally sound expositions of selected passages from 1 Corinthians, demonstrating their relevance to the modern church. They deal with the scandal of the cross, sexual immorality, marriage, and spiritual gifts, for example. This book is almost a commentary on 1 Corinthians, except that it's selective, not exhaustive, in the passages it covers. One prominent feature of the book is that it is written very pastorally. It's written in the tone of a pastor preaching to his congregation, with both insightful anecdotes and practical exhortations dispersed throughout. The book also contains discussion questions for each chapter for use in a group Bible study, which it would be well-suited for.
