Andreola Review

Are you looking for a Christian guide to natural science that can be used by a big family (or group) of students of different grade levels? Would you welcome a course that attempts to rid you of any guilt you might have for not using a typical textbook? If so, I recommend Considering God’s Creation. This program focuses on observing and investigating the natural world, integrating science with the Bible. It comes with a Teacher’s Manual, a Student Notebook, and a CD.

The Teacher’s Manual starts off each lesson with an introduction to the topic, preparation instructions, pertinent vocabulary, a song or poem (included on the CD), a Bible reading, a Student Notebook activity, review, and a “Digging Deeper” suggestion. Topics include the universe (stars, planets, Earth and its atmosphere); weather; rocks and minerals; the plant and animal kingdoms; human anatomy; and more. The Student Notebook features crafts and exercises that enhance the lesson. These enjoyable cut-and-paste activities include sorting through a pile of paper bones and pasting them on the corresponding creatures, or making a frog life-cycle booklet, for example.

The program also suggests that students keep a supplemental notebook, to record information and discoveries, and to store some of the completed activity pages. I like the idea of keeping a notebook. It is a refreshing replacement for the usual multiple-choice sorts of activities found in the textbook/workbook grind. I would suggest, however, that younger students tell little narrations on what they are learning and that older students include written narrations in their notebooks.

Incorporating books from your personal library or public library makes this course complete. Used this way, the topics will provide enough thorough study for two years. For grades 2 to 7. Older students are directed to dig deeper using Lyrical Life Science, the Moody Science videos, and other excellent resources. Each child should have his own Student Notebook and supplemental notebook. Some common household materials are needed for the activities. Authors Mortimer and Smith are two enthusiastic homeschooling mothers who designed the course for fellow homeschoolers. Teacher’s Manual: 112 pages, softcover. Student Notebook: 270 perforated reproducible pages, softcover. From Eagle’s Wings.
