Product Description

This indispensable tool for biblical scholars is new and improved. This classic reference is designed to be a complete concordance to the Septuagint version of the Old Testament, to the Greek text of the apocryphal books, and to the remains of the other versions that formed part of Origen's Hexapla. The objective aims at in the quotations for each word, as far as possible, to have enough of the context to show the grammatical construction of the word and the words with which it is ordinarily associated. New features of this concordance include: the addition of a Hebrew/Aramaic Index to the Septuagint by Takamitsu Muraoka. This index identifies the various Greek words used to translate each Hebrew or Aramaic word, a new introductory essay by Robert A. Kraft and Emmanuel Tov that addresses the history and abiding value of the concordance while also providing suggestions for its use, and the additions and corrections, originally appearing in three separate locations, have been brought together and identified in the text of the concordance with symbols that alert the user to consult the list. Also, a comprehensive list of abbreviations used throughout the concordance has been compiled as an aid to the user.

Since the contexts are in Greek only, you must be able to read biblical Greek to use this concordance.

Author Bio

Edwin Hatch (1835–1889) graduated from Pembroke College, Oxford, and served as a minister, professor, theologian, and Septuagint scholar. Among the many books and articles to his credit are The Organization of the Early Christian Churches, The Growth of Church Institutions, Essays in Biblical Greek, and The Influence of Greek Ideas and Usages upon the Christian Church.

Henry A. Redpath (1848–1908) was a minister and biblical scholar. He graduated from Oxford where he later served as a Grinfield lecturer on the Septuagint. In addition to completing the Concordance to the Septuagint, he authored several books and articles.

Publisher Description

This edition also includes an introductory essay by Septuagint scholars Robert Kraft and Emanuel Tov and an improved system for utilizing the appendices.

For one hundred years the Hatch and Redpath Concordance to the Septuagint has been an indispensable tool for biblical scholars. Now back by demand, this revised edition assures that the tool will be used for many years to come.

One of the most useful additions to the concordance is an extensive Hebrew index by internationally renowned Septuagint scholar Takamitsu Muraoka, which lists all of the Greek words used to translate each Hebrew and Aramaic word. Since the old index listed only page and column references, Muraoka's index will allow for more efficient research.

This edition boasts a number of other new features. Corrections, which were previously listed only in the appendix, are identified in the text. A new introduction by Septuagint scholars Robert Kraft and Emanuel Tov has been added as well as a complete list of abbreviations. Also, both volumes of the previous edition are combined into one binding.

Invaluable for tracing Greek words back to original Hebrew usage. Familiarize yourself with Greek alphabet to use it. I searched high and low for this book and no one could beat this price.

In addition to its aid with the semantic range of OT Greek/Hebrew, this concordance comes into its own when reverting texts from Greek to Hebrew, especially when investigating potential textual variants. It is more convenient than compiling lists using Bible software programs.

Since this is the only Septuagint concordance I know of that`s currently available in hard copy, it wins 5 stars by default. Remains to be seen how the binding will stand up under regular use. I needed to rent a forklift to unload it off the flatbed trailer when it was delivered. Just kidding. It is a massive volume, however; over 20 pounds, I estimate.

Great resource, but you have to know Greek! Don't buy it if you don't. A lot of Bible software has LXX concordances now, but this is great if your a book person. Definitely worth the price.
