Product Description

This large manual provides everything you need to know about celebrating Messianic Jewish traditions. Examining the Old Testament festivals through the lens of the New Testament, the author lines up the seasonal parallels, New Testament parallels, and current/future parallels in the Old Testament feasts. Worksheets, readings, games, songs, stories, crafts, prayers, plays, recipes, lessons, banners, and illustrated charts are included for Sabbath, New Moon, Passover, Pentecost, New Year, the Day of Atonement, Festival of tabernacles, Hanukkah, and Purim. Combining traditional activities with those the author created, this is a unique guide perfect for families with children. Both English and English transliterations of Hebrew words are provided for festivals and biblical words. 681 pages, softcover, with glossary and index.

Susan Mortimer puts out another stellar work that is both complete and true. Susan has an uncanny wisdom and interest in the Hebrew festivals that brings a rich understanding to the Bible and to the New Testament church by weaving together history from the festivals in with their fulfillments in Christ. If you don't understand the festivals in the Bible, you really are not getting the full worth out of your Bible. Susan brings games, pictures, crafts, and foods forth so that a person, child, or adult, or a family or a church group can learn about this deep and rich topic in a fun, experiential way. The only criticism I have ever had with Susan's work is that I wish she'd pair up with someone more gifted in the graphic arts and bring her ideas forth in a more contemporary artistic style.

Most Jews don't appreciate the way Jewish holidays have beenappropriated by Christians, with Christian meanings superimposed on them. Most Christian websites and books promote an inauthentic (ie non-Jewish)perspective on these holidays - akin to finding Jesus in Divali, Eid, or anyother non-Christian festival. It is true that Jesus was Jewish and did observe many of these holidays. However, he did not follow them with any "Christian" intent, for obviousreasons. Additionally, Jewish holiday celebrations have changed a great deal in thelast 2000 years.Jesus himself, if he were here today, might not recognize the modern form ofmany Jewish observances, all of which were instituted by rabbis who did notaccept Jesus as a Jewish messiah. If the Biblical holidays lend depth to your study of the Jewish Bible, that'swonderful, but it is important to maintain a perspective on just how authenticthey are (or are not).
