He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and have been transformed into three major motion pictures.

Pauline Baynes has produced hundreds of wonderful illustrations for the seven books in The Chronicles of Narnia. In 1968 she was awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for her outstanding contribution to children's literature.

I bought this book as a Christmas present for my wife. She has worn out a set of paperback Narnia books by reading them to herself, me , and our kids for the past 20 years. I mean WORN OUT. She wanted to read it to our youngest kids, but they were falling apart. This format is AWESOME for adults to read, and also to read to the kids. This is a sturdy hardcover book that will far outlast the paperback or slipcase books. Also the price is right. This is a prized possession, and I can see her reading it to our kids and Grandkids for the rest of her life.

One cannot go wrong reading Lewis' most popular "children's story." This volume is set apart by putting the tales in Lewis' preferred order beginning with The Magician's Nephew. Having all the chronicles in one volume is great. I'm glad I made the purchase and intend to read the books again for the tenth time or so.

It is wonderful to have all the books in one volume. I keep giving away my own copy. I now have two copies and plan on loaning them out and not giving them away. This is a good series to read to children and for adults 21-99+ years young to read.

Q: Would this be ok to give to a child age 11? I was just wondering if this book with all the stories in one, would be appropriate to give to a child this young or would it be better to buy the individual books..Are there illustrations in this book?

A:

Yes - this does have illustrations. As far as an 11 year old, generally it depends on the reading level, but I would think that this is a perfect age for this book.
