"I wish we could have science every day," my ten-year-old daughter gushed.

"Science is my favorite subject," my six-year-old granddaughter said, then amended, "at least with this book."

"Me too," my seven-year-old grandson said.

This was a new response to science! And the curriculum that garnered the excitement was The Complete Zoo Adventure by Mary and Gary Parker. Half book, half kit, The Complete Zoo Adventure takes the student through the study of twenty-seven creatures as the authors explain why these creatures create problems for the evolutionist and describe features that demonstrate each one's unique design by God. The program comes in a spiral-bound notebook with the kit occupying a cardboard envelope on the back cover.

The authors break the full-color, 160-pages into four sections. The first section tells you how to use the kit. The second section contains the heart of the book, two- or three-page spreads about each of the 27 animals covered. Each includes beautiful full-color photographs and a world map locating the animal. "After the Zoo" provides multiple pages of worksheets for parents to copy for younger, middle, and advanced students. The last section is the appendix with teaching aids, a glossary, and an index. Hooty the Owl shows up in most chapters with tips on safety or special information about the animal being studied.

The kit contains 27 field fact cards, 7 biome cards, 3 field journals, and 12 name badges. Each field fact card summarizes facts about one of the animals. The biome cards describe seven different habitats: evergreen forests, deciduous forests, tundra, rainforests, grasslands, deserts, and chaparral. Name badges allow you to assign responsibilities at the zoo, and the field journals provide places to name the animals seen, draw them, and tell whether each is a bird, mammal, reptile, or amphibian.

The Parkers provide seven devotionals and a complementary section to each devotional describing some element of the creation/evolution controversy. They explain and apply passages from Genesis 1-9; John 1:1-14; Exodus 20:11; Romans 8: 18-23; and John 3:16. Depending on how many animals you wish to study at a time, this unit study would serve for a good quarter of science study or could be done in less.

Husband and wife team, Gary and Mary Parker, have worked together on several creationist books. Gary is a prolific writer and has lectured for both the Institute for Creation Research and Answers in Genesis. They seem to be devoting a lot of time and energy now to providing creationist materials for elementary through high school students.

Unfortunately the book is not very durable. We already need to duct tape it together. It would also be more helpful if parents had the option of downloading the various teacher aids rather than copying them.

Still, these are minor considerations when the children are learning and enjoying science with a strong creationist thrust in a program that can be used with various ages. The materials are colorful, attractive, and well-organized. The Complete Zoo Adventure is fun, educational, and promises to make our next trip to the zoo something to remember! – Debbie W. I have always loved visiting the zoo.We make it a point to visit the zoo in every city we visit. It's been a lot of fun to see how different each zoo can be!

We've passed on our love of animals to our girls, and we enjoy taking family trips to our local zoo and aquariums.

I was so excited to review The Complete Zoo Adventure by Mary & Gary Parker - it's a field trip in a book! The book is laid out with wonderful pictures and facts about many different types of animals. The book starts out with 7 devotionals {one for each day before your zoo trip} designed to help you look ahead to your zoo adventure.

The book has tabbed sections which makes it easy to find the animal{s} that you are looking for. The pictures are bright and colorful, and information included is perfect for a field trip. We were able to find facts about giraffes {Bella's favorite} and zebras {Sophie's favorite} quickly and easily.

I personally love the Field Fact Cards {27 total} that are easy to carry around and have quick facts right on the cards. They are made of sturdy card stock, but I recommend laminating them, especially if you let your kids carry them around.

We haven't had a chance to use the enclosed field guides, simply because my girls are a little young for them, but I can't wait to try them out in a few months! This is one of my favorite things about homeschooling - we can re-use and tweak materials to fit the stage our girls are at.

The Complete Zoo Adventure is a unique book that will educate and entertain animal lovers anywhere. It's practically a field trip in a book. A trip to the zoo will never be the same :). The book is divided into 3 main sections: "Before the Zoo," "At the Zoo," and "After the Zoo." The first section includes a planning calendar, 7 devotionals, 7 creation lessons ("Looking Ahead"), and field trip prep time. The second section includes 27 encounters with God's creatures, Hooty's smart rules, 27 field fact cards, 7 biome cards, 3 field journals, and 12 name badges (the last four items are all packed in the tool kit which is attached to the inside back cover). The last section includes questions for discussion, 35 reproducible activity sheets, suggestions for group activities, Scripture memory texts, and professional educator notes for parents/teachers. The animals covered in this book are organized into 5 different categories: Birds, Paws & Claws, Hooves, Reptiles, and Amphibians. A zoo glossary is included at the end of the book.

I enjoyed using the book with my sons. I appreciate the clear creation message presented throughout the book. The photos are beautiful and colorful. Every chapter points to our Creator. It's a great field guide that will enhance your zoo experience. God is totally awesome! His creation definitely reflects that. My kids and I love discovering all the cool facts about these incredible creatures that God made.

      Did you know...

that an eagle can spot an animal the size of a rabbit from a height of 10,500 feet?

that meerkats are immune to most venoms, including that of cobras?

that tortoises can go without eating or drinking for up to a year?

that the flying tree frog spreads its webbed feet to make four parachutes and glide gracefully?

I have had the privileged of reviewing The Complete Zoo Adventure from Master Books publishing. The book is written by Mary and Gary Parker. There are several tabbed sections: Before the Zoo, At the Zoo and After the Zoo.

Before the Zoo: This section contains a planning calendar, devotions and field trip preparations. There are 7 devotionals regarding creation. They are very well written in a manor that children even age 4 and 5 can comprehend. There is also a "looking ahead "section to go with each devotional which provides 7 creation foundation lessons with wonderful scientific facts.

At the Zoo: This section of the book contains some great facts about 27 animals including birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Like did you know that a hummingbirds heart beats 1,000 times a minute? Or that there is a Rhinoceros that lives in Asia? Those were things I did not know.

After the Zoo: This section contains some wonderful activities like matching, word finds, connect the dots, puzzles, projects and more.

Attached to the back of the book is a tool kit which includes field fact cards, 7 biome cards, 3 field journals and 12 name badges. Everything in the kit is easy to photo copy if you need to produce multiple copies.

For our zoo adventure we did the 7 days of devotions, read several of the facts and took the field journals with us to the zoo. My children are only 4 and 5 so we didn't take full advantage of the book but we will definitely be doing it again when they are a bit older.

These are a couple of the baby animals we saw the day of our zoo adventure. The Atlanta Zoo has had quite a baby boom lately so it has been a lot of fun watching them all grow. We have visited the zoo once a month since August because my daughter was doing a Homeschool Zoo Academy class.

We photo copied a few field journals for our friends so they could join in the fun too. All of the kids really enjoyed drawing pictures of the animals and discussing whether they were birds, mammals, reptiles or amphibians.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes only from New Leaf Publishing Group. No monetary compensation was received. Many of the links found on my my side bars and in my blog posts are affiliate links. As a result, I might get paid money and I will most likely spend the money on homeschool supplies.

Are you planning on taking a trip to the zoo in the near future? Well then here is a perfect resource to help combat all the evolutionary ‘facts' that abound at the Zoo. This is a beautifully spiral case bound book that is colorful and provides an extensive learning experience. With 150 pages and all the included extras this will easily provide a whole unit study on the zoo or, if your children are in public school, will help to refute what they are being taught in the class room.

There are nine sections which are tab divided into before the zoo, at the zoo, birds, paws and claws, hooves, reptiles, amphibians, after the zoo and an appendix. Before the zoo includes 7 daily devotionals that parent and child will use the week before visiting to get excited about the trip and become educated. There is a guide in how to use The Complete Zoo Adventure book and a schedule for both before, at and after the zoo. The devotions each have Scripture to read and a theme, for Devotion 1 the theme/title is "Jesus, the Creator-the Presence of God, there is also a prayer that you can use to pray with your children. Each devotion is fairly long - two pages in small type - so for the younger child the parent may need to just pull the important aspects out or do it over the course of the day.

At the zoo will help you after you arrive and begin your field assignments - everything you need is in a handy pouch in the back of the book and there are reproducibles for class/group/families. Details are given about how to proceed in getting started with field assignments, filling out field journals, rules and tips for having a great day at the zoo and a prayer. I'd suggest going over these proceeding the devotional each day before the zoo and doing a review on the trip, as most children won't remember all of the twenty-seven rules and tips.

Each of the animal sections gives extensive information on various animals within that group. For each animal you'll find the class, order, family, genus and species listed as well as a map indicating where they are found and other pertinent information of how they fit into God's Creation and more on the animal. Again, with so much information it may be difficult to read everything while standing at the animal enclosures, so pulling out the important information before hand may go a long way in saving time, especially if you have more than one child.

There are several activities for completion after the zoo such as the "Around the Campfire", personal discussion, having a trivia game using the enclosed field fact cards, if you have older children they can use the "For Deeper Discussion" and do a research paper, completing a scrapbook, while tests and activity sheets are also included in the book and may be copied. Some of the activity sheets are matching the correct nose to the animal God created for it, connect the dots with writing practice in both upper and lower case and print and cursive, find and color animals with certain attributes, word finds, how is it named (class, genus, species), and more!

If you're not sure how to use the biome cards there is complete instructions in the back along with Scripture memory suggestions for each animal, educator notes for parents/teachers (unless you're both!), a zoo glossary, and extra field journal should you need to make copies. In your tool kit you'll find:

27 field fact cards - full color and on heavy duty paper (these could be laminated for extra durability especially if you take them along to the zoo)

7 biome cards - beautiful and full colored with illustrations these to are printed on heavy paper and could be laminated as well.

3 field journals - these are double folded cards for the children to record their notes, printed on heavy paper and are reproducible.

12 name badges - I will be putting my children's name on these as well as a cell phone number on the back should we become separated and laminate them for extended use. The holes are already punched to easy hanging with some yarn.

I like the feeling of not having to do everything, my 4 year old won't sit through all of this but my 9 year would. The activity sheets I will be copying so that mine will stay busy on the way to the zoo. If you are a parent who tires of reading and trying to make excuses on the spot at the zoo of the evolutionary nature of the information this book will be a wonderful resource to have a long.

The Complete Zoo Adventure is an amazing book with so many different uses/applications I hardly know where to begin! First off, let me begin by saying "Thank You!" to the authors, Mary and Gary Parker and to the publishers, Master Books, for giving us a book about animals and their lives which does not revolve around evolution! The subtitle of this book calls it "A Field Trip in a Book". It is that and so much more!

This book is a nicely spiral bound hard-cover book, which contains activities for leading up to, during, and after a trip to a zoo. It is a great book for families, homeschoolers, Christian school teachers, etc. There are facts and illustrations about so many different animals one may encounter at a zoo—eyecatching and just begging to be read and learned! There are devotions dealing with animals and what will be seen/learned at a zoo. There are great activities and resources for students and teachers! Shall I go on? At the back of the book, attached to the inner cover, is a folder containing field fact cards, biome cards, field journals, name tags. . .The creators of this book were very thorough, and this book will be a definite addition to our homeschool curriculum! We look forward to using it next year to supplement our animal segment.

I'm sure you've guessed already, but I would definitely recommend this book. I think I may even use it as a gift for some of my nieces and nephews! They'll love it! (and so will their parents!)

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review; I was not required to write a positive review.
