Product Description

The urban landscape is changing and, as a result, urban ministries are at a crossroads. If the Church is to be an effective agent of compassion and justice, we must change our mission strategies. In this compelling book, Lupton asks tough questions about service providing and community building to help us enhance our effectiveness. Among the questions: What dilemmas do caring people encounter to faithfully carry out the teachings of Scripture and become personally involved with "the least of these?" What are some possible alternatives to the ways we have traditionally attempted to care for the poor? How do people, programs and neighborhoods move toward reciprocal, interdependent relationships? To effect these types of changes will require new skill sets and resources, but the possibilities for good are great.

I agree. I wrote another organization, "Common Ground" a rebuttal on their position that understanding the Trinity came first, and that they were "surprised" over the laity discussions over poverty, immigration, church closings, and race - rather than these deeper questions. I quoted to them Our Lord's injunction, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and strength and mind, and - no less important - thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On this hang the Law and the prophets." (Or, as Hillel said the same when asked to define the Law, "All the rest [of the Law] is commentary." James the apostle also said in so many words, we manifest our faith by how we treat other people. The late mayor of chicago, Richard J. Daley (father of the present mayor) once said to Mayor Lindsay (NYC)'s lofty statements of "bringing peace to everyone," "People are interested in whether their garbage is picked up on time...as showing that you care about the neighborhood and its concerns." Daley was a devout church-goer. Sincerely,Marian Shaw

Great book on Christian Community Development in an urban setting!I was given a copy as a gift. When I was done reading, I immediately bought four more to give as gifts to friends. Two of those friends have already told me that they're enjoying the read as well.

Lupton brings his 30 years of inner city ministry experience to the pages of this book. He shares real life stories of changed lives and the results of surface thinking concerning those who live in low-income neighborhoods as well as some very practical and Biblical solutions that can change poverty in America.
