Publisher's Description

"Now I know that every single day, the best and the worst, only lasts for twenty-four hours."
—Tricia Lott Williford, And Life Comes Back

When your life falls apart—through a death, a lost relationship, a diagnosis—you want more than anything to know that your pain has a purpose. And that beyond your pain, a new day awaits.

Tricia Lott Williford discovered this in a few tragic hours when her thirty-five-year-old husband died unexpectedly. In And Life Comes Back, she writes with soaring prose about her tender, brave journey as a widow with two young boys in the agonizing days and months that followed his death.

And Life Comes Back documents the tenacity of love, the exquisite transience of each moment, and the laughter that comes even in loss. This traveler’s guide to finding new life after setbacks offers no easy answers or glib spiritual maxims but instead draws you into your own story and the hope that waits for you even now.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for And Life Comes Back

"I couldn’t put And Life Comes Back down. As Tricia Lott Williford shared the heartbreaking death of her husband, her words spoke with piercing clarity to my own wife-heart. Holding nothing back, Tricia carried me through the pain, straight to what I know to be true about God—his faithfulness, goodness, strength, and peace, even in the midst of horrific loss. Of all the books you read this year, you can’t miss this one! It’s a journey that will leave you changed forever."
—Sherry Surratt, CEO and president, MOPS International

"Tricia Lott Williford’s book reminds us it often takes a thick darkness to make known the light. And Life Comes Back is a candle that will light your path."
—Donald Miller, New York Times best-selling author of Blue Like Jazz

"Tricia Williford’s brave, exquisitely wrought book is an act of stunning generosity. It is a story of grief, yes, but also of how love, language, and work can give us back to ourselves, even after enormous loss, and can push us out of brutal darkness into the glorious, ordinary light of every day."
—Marisa de los Santos, New York Times best-selling author of Belong to Me and Falling Together

"I read this book through the night, every word a singular step toward purity and grace. Tricia Lott Williford takes us to a place so tender in its loss and yet so full of life that we willingly go with her through the sorrow to the truth of what comes after the great darkness. And Life Comes Back is no magical thinking. It is a treasure for any who love ’what death can touch.’ A stunning voice; her story and her sharing of it a unique and longed-for celebration of the human spirit."
—Jane Kirkpatrick, award-winning author of Where Lilacs Still Bloom

"In the midst of devastating pain and the frailty of motherhood, Tricia narrates each scene with such poetic perfection about her own imperfection. Pages are woven with honesty, humor, doubt, and faith to reveal a woman’s unapologetic questioning of God, death, and grace. With bite-size lessons in friendship, marriage, and parenting, Tricia helps us capture the presence of God in both tragedy and in everyday dialogue."
—Dave Smith, executive pastor, Willow Creek Community Church (Crystal Lake Campus)

"Tricia’s story is profound and at the same time so simple. It’s tragic and at the same time so universal. It’s a story of deep grief and deep healing. It’s a story of hope for those of us who have been in the ditch and who pray we’ll find life again. It’s a story for you and me. You won’t want to miss this one."
—Allison Vesterfelt, author of Packing Light: Thoughts on Living Life with Less Baggage

I've said several times that everyone has a story, but not every story should become a book.

Tricia Lott Williford has a story, and fortunately it has become a book, one I think you will be blessed by reading.

"And Life Comes Back" (published by WaterBrook press) tells the very personal story of Williford enduring the trauma of unexpectedly, and very suddenly, losing her husband. One minute he's the picture of health, a loving husband in a loving marriage, and a wonderful father of two young and energetic boys, and then just a few hours later he dies on his bedroom floor.

    What a tragic story!

However, don't think this is a long, drawn out story that just attempts to milk emotion from you. It's very different than that. The prologue captured my attention, and I was in tears by the end of chapter one. Rest assured this story will definitely pull on your emotions, but in a good way.

The first half of the book delights the reader with a beautiful picture of what a marriage filled with love between two imperfect people can be like. You can identify with both the husband and the wife, and connect with similar experiences and challenges. And then you will be rocked by a poignant picture of heartbreaking loss that forever tears apart a marriage so many readers would love to emulate.

The only weak moment in the book is the sudden shift about midway through when the author shares that not every moment in the marriage was picture perfect, and begins to move the reader into the aftermath of loss. It's weak only because the reader goes from a flowing love story to seeing some of the hardness without a transition. Beyond that, the story continues to work out as the writer shares how life begins to come back to her, one agonizing day at a time.

Williford is a gifted wordsmith. The story flows so smoothly, so effortlessly, and so interestingly, that there's hardly a spare, unneeded word. One unfolding story is unveiled through multiple smaller stories, each of which will hold your interest through the myriad ways you can relate to the many things that make up life that we tend to think so little of until its too late.

"And Life Comes Back" is also a story of faith. The mutual faith of a loving couple living for Christ together, and the faith of a widow who has to discover how to live again when her life companion is wrenched from her life.

This book will move you, perhaps challenge you, and certainly inspire you because it's just one of those beautiful stories that should be told.

    And read.

This is a true story about Tricia Lott Williford and how her 31 year old husband dies suddenly and leaves her alone with her 2 young boys. Tricia tells of how her and Robb shared special moments and events in their lives before the tragedy and how happy her family life was. She goes deep into her world of hurt and depression after the death of Robb. How is she going to survive? How will her 2 boys be able to cope without their father?

Tricia doesn't hold back with her feelings, at times I felt so deep for her hurting and didn't know if I could keep reading...... but..... she then makes you laugh and you want to know how is she going to get through her heartbreak? Her open and honest story gives the reader hope no matter what happens in your life, you can and will survive. You will hit rock bottom, but GOD will always bring you back up the mountain.

I would recommend this book to ladies that want a true, honest and real life experience. This is a wonderful book, not my typical reading.... but so glad I did. This book will make you think about life differently.

And Life Comes Back is the third memoir of young widowhood I've read in the past two months, so I think I had a bit of subject matter fatigue influencing my reaction to this book. I found it difficult to read at times, but again, I think this was simply the time at which I read it. This author has fabulous writing credentials, and several authors I admire (Marisa de los Santos, Donald Miller) gave winning blurbs to this story. So I defer to them and suggest that you give it a chance. Had I not agreed to give it a timely review, I would have waited. For now, I'm putting it on my pile to re-read in a few months, and I trust I'll enjoy it much more the second time around.

I almost lost my husband to a heart attack last year, so I was fascinated when I heard of Tricia Lott Williford's book. At the age of 31, Tricia lost her husband suddenly and unexpectedly. Left with two young sons to raise alone, she had to continue with the routines of daily life of being a mother while grieving the loss her husband and their father.

Because of Tricia's transparency, I didn't have to experience the loss myself to know what it's like. Her story-telling gripped me, carrying me on her journey with her, and it was an honor to feel a part of it. I am tucking the phases of grief in my memory bank for future reference, especially the unexpected. Some emotions she dealt with took me by surprise, made sense, and were feelings her counselor affirmed as ‘normal' - things I had never heard told, secrets that many Christians would likely not want to share.

This book was a journey through grief like none I have ever read, and a heart-breaking but beautiful story that shows that the sun does shine after the rain, even a very long season of rain.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

If one day your husband was fine and a few days later he dies in your arms, you would probably try to pull yourself out of a nightmare. Only for Tricia Lott Williford, there was no escaping this nightmare because the sirens, paramedics and funeral were all too real. Left with two boys, both toddlers, and life being turned upside down -- on the day before Christmas Eve, she had a long journey ahead of her to heal. Not only did she need to heal, but her boys had questions.

How do you respond when your oldest starts Kindergarten and you feel you should give the teacher the heads up on what happened less than a year ago? How do you respond when you go to an open house and see he has said his dream trip is to hop on a cloud with his brother and mommy so they can visit daddy in heaven?

Although life seems to stop for Tricia, it continues for everyone else. There are bills to pay. Bill that arrive addressed to Robb Williford.

What do you say when people ask your marital status? Especially when you aren't ready yet to remove the ring on your finger. You still feel married. But are you? "Widowed" is such a harsh word. Is that what you really are? But you can't be. You are too young to be a widow.

While I am sure the author censored this book and left some things private, it's a real journey. It's honest. She doesn't leave out panic attacks. It's the book of death -- of a man who sounds like an amazing person. The death of a relationship, a family. But as the title says, "And Life Comes Back: A Wife's story of Love, Loss, and Hope Reclaimed". The boys begin praying for their new daddy. She starts becoming open to the idea. Not to replace Robb. No one ever would.

This book was an amazing read. I finished it in less than 12 hours. I'm not sure I should say I loved this book because of the subject matter, but it was extremely well written. It's also a book I have been looking forward to for a long time since I follow her blog and read she received a publishing contract. The wait was worth it. I expect it will be the best book I read this year. It's that good.

She has a writing style that draws me and captures me especially when you mix that with her raw honesty. I'm hoping to read more from her in the future (but hopefully if she does author another book it will be a more lighthearted subject matter as she's experienced enough pain for a lifetime.)

Even in the midst of tradgedy she can find humor. I was reading this book and started laughing so hard someone in the room asked me what was so funny. I read the passage to my friend -- a passage from right after Tricia's husband died and a victim's advocate was pretty much intruding on the family. As I read it, my friend started laughing as hard as I was. At the end of the passage, the author says once this woman left she told everyone they were more helpful than she was. They laughed. Many times I have said in life you have to choose to laugh or cry. While they were crying, they chose to laugh, and it comes through the pages of a book beautifully.

While I finished this book about two weeks ago, I can't stop thinking about it. I can't recommend it enough. You won't forget this story of life, death, and learning to live after your world shattered.

FTC disclosure: I was provided with an advanced reading copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. The opinions are my own.
