Publisher's Description

Find a fuller, richer life by letting God direct your destiny.

The story of Ruth is a journey of transformation. By allowing God to transform her circumstances, Ruth went from a widow who would be excluded from society to a wife with a secure and protected future, a future that ultimately paved the way for the birth of King David! Her story is full of collision--loss, heartache, poverty, even shame--but she never let her past define her. Instead, the most painful time of her life became her most pivotal, propelling her to a destiny she never imagined.

Perhaps you have a past you're struggling to overcome. If disappointments, whether a result of your own choices or the actions of others, have kept you from being your true self, this book is for you. Follow Ruth's life and discover the hope available to each of us. Your yesterday does not have to dictate your tomorrow.

Despite your past pain, you, too, can find redemption and restoration.

I have always loved the book of Ruth. Probably even more so since reading Tessa Afshars fictional account of Ruth in her book In the Field of Grace.

What Sarah did in Colliding with Destiny is take the scriptures apart and then write a short chapter reflecting on how these words can apply to our lives today. She takes examples from her own life and shares her mistakes, regrets and deepest hurts.

You could easily make this book a daily devotional as most of the chapters are only a couple of pages long. Each chapter ends with Sarah sharing a bit more in a Journaling section and then asks questions so you can journal or share in a small group your thoughts. There is also a short prayer at the end of each chapter.

Sarah gave me some new insights into this familiar, yet powerful, story. If you enjoy the book of Ruth and encouraged by her I recommend this book as another way to delve into these scriptures.

A copy of this book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Colliding with Destiny is a walk through on the life of Ruth. Each chapter covers a little bit of her life with journaling ideas or just thought-provoking questions to dwell and think upon throughout the day. Ruth's story is one of loss and heartache that rewarded her with riches untold as she came into the line of the Messiah. Her destiny aligned with the life of her Christ and no impact could be better. The author wants, Sarah Jakes, wants this for her readers as well. There is hope in your circumstances, your situations, your loss, and your heartache.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book today. See what God has in store for you through your life, and discover the real you in the midst of your life. The real you is Christ in you. Sarah Jakes's quote "Your yesterday does not have to dictate your tomorrow" is a saying to remember for all times of life.

I was named for my Great Aunt Ruthie but the book of Ruth still feels like a type of Namesake - not that I have anything in common with Ruth's historical and family story, but as a person I feel I can relate. This is a book about a journey. Life is a journey. Your life, my life, everyone's life. Journeys are about transformation. This transformation maybe be small or large, but with any journey there is a change and an impact. God used the circumstances of Ruth's journey to change her into the woman He wanted her to be. I long for this in my life.

I received this book from Bethany House and am not being compensated for my review.

COLLIDING WITH DESTINY by Sarah Jakes

I love the story of Ruth and was eager to read this book!

But the book relates Sarah Jakes experiences to the events of The Biblical Ruths life, where it fits.

I think this book would appeal especially to other women have made similar life choices. I think this book could be of best value to those who are striving to reach out of despair, whether from choices or circumstances.

But, here and there, there is a nugget for all-one chapter heading, Those who love you will protect you is a concept that could apply to all. God Will Put like-minded people in your life, and broken people can still be used (by God for good) these attitudes of self-acceptance enables your collision with Destiny. Finding Gods will for your life is your destiny. This book could inspire you and support your search for your personal destiny history.

Colliding with Destiny was a good book about working through the process of colliding. I needed this. I tend to shy away from potential collisions, but Sally showed how collisions are a good thing - when it's with God's Destiny for us.

I appreciated seeing/learning about Ruth from the perspective Sally shared - not just as a woman who did things right, but HOW she did them right. I highlighted a lot. I plan to go back through the book and use it as a reminder to myself into/through some life collisions. I am trusting they are collisions God wants me to have, but because of past pain I tend to detour.

I also appreciated the author's story being woven into the pages, the chapters, the journalling and prayers at the end of each chapter were insightful of how she learned and is continuing to learn the lessons she shares.

    Making an ancient story relevant

I recently read Colliding with Destiny, which is a 31 chapter study on the book of Ruth written by Sarah Jakes. I ended up consuming the book rather quickly, taken in by the honest writing of Jakes and the compelling story of Ruth. And though I have read the book of Ruth before, with Jakes' commentary, it was almost like reading a new story.

When I first began reading, I found the structure of the book to be strange, with each chapter being only 2-3 pages long in general. However, I found myself enjoying the layout, and I think it would make a wonderful morning devotional. Each chapter starts with a few verses from the book of Ruth. Then Jakes shares a short personal anecdote which she beautifully relates to the scripture. After a commentary on the few verses, which often includes cultural references from the time of Ruth, Jakes provides a journal prompt and several questions.

I really enjoyed this study and loved the personal touches Jakes added to the book. She wove many stories from her life, and I found myself wanting to know more. I'd love to read Sarah Jakes biography after reading Colliding with Destiny.

My favorite part of this book is that Jakes took and a very old story and turned it into something very relevant in our modern world. And aesthetically, this book is beautiful, from the cover to the headings and embellishments inside. It was obvious a lot of effort went into the writing and presentation of the book, which was lovely.

I would recommend this book to any woman seeking to dive deep into the book of Ruth and her legacy. It would make a wonderful month-long devotional, or even a Bible study. Undoubtedly, anyone who reads this book will take something away from it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
