Cloze is intended to develop students' comprehension and vocabulary as they search for meaning through a proven process of closure. Two types of cloze activities are provided, those that involve filling in blanks from a given list of words and others that provide open-ended solutions. As the activities proceed, the difficulty and complexity of the lessons increase. Each of the thirty-three activities include a teacher information page which lists the activity's objective, teaching points, evaluation and solutions. The language activities are varied and theme-based and are in various formats including stories, poems, letters, and informational and fictional passages. The teacher information sections provide a variety of teaching strategies and suggestions about how to use cloze techniques along with the reading program. Cloze is a well-known teaching strategy for developing language skills in elementary schools. There are two main types of cloze exercises in this book-exercises where answer lists are given and those where the students provide their own words. In both cases, reading strategies such as context clues, syntactic and semantic skills and word recognition are practiced. The factual stories enable the students to use their reading skills while learning interesting facts about a variety of topics. The imaginative stories will help to expand vocabulary and could be used as starting points for written expression. Students should provide their own words in cloze review situations and not select words from a given list. Grades 2-3.
