Tell us a little about yourself. Of course, as a children's author, I love kids! My husband and I have two grown children and six beautiful grandkids who fill our lives with sunshine. We're also in our twentieth year of teaching at Kids Klub, a mid-week program at our church. Besides writing, I enjoy working in my flower gardens or immersing myself in a good book one written for adults or kids! In fact, when I visit a bookstore or the library, I usually end up in the children's section. Just mention the word "travel" and you've got my attention! We recently had the opportunity to visit the Boston/Cape Cod area and came away thoroughly enchanted.
What was your motivation behind this project? Clopper clip-clopped onto the scene when my aunt asked me to write a Christmas story to read to kids at church. That was a few years ago, so actually, Clopper the Christmas Donkey was the first children's book I wrote although the first ones published were the Twiggenbotham Adventures. Clopper and the Night Travelers developed after Ed Olson suggested a sequel covering the time in baby Jesus' life after his birth. I love Ed's rich illustrations and am thrilled with the finished book.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? In both Clopper the Christmas Donkey and Clopper and the Night Travelers, I wanted kids to understand the unique position of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior even as a baby. I also wanted to show God's sovereignty and protection.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? As with everything I write, I found that praying through the writing process helped me focus on the Lord and his direction for where the book would go. So the personal impact is seeing what God can do through his gift of writing if I give him the reins.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I remember finishing Hannah Hurnard's Hinds' Feet on High Places and thinking I'd like to write like that. I've also found inspiration in the picturesque writing of Max Lucado and Boede Thoene or reading theology so beautifully presented by A.W.Tozer and C.S.Lewis. Most of all, though, my greatest source of inspiration is in the Word of God himself.
