Insights from Philip Yanceys personal pilgrimage away from and back to the church. Why are there so many more professing Christians than churchgoing Christians? Is it because something is wrong with the church? In his candid, thought-provoking manner, award-winning author Philip Yancey reveals the reasons behind his own journey back from skepticism to wholehearted participation in the church, and weighs the churchs human failings against its compelling worth as the body of Christ. Yancey does not whitewash the churchs faults, rather he sets them against the overwhelming balance of its strengths: its heart for God, its care for the hurting, its outreach to the lost, and its value as family and community.
Philip Yancey serves as editor-at-large for Christianity Today magazine. He has written thirteen Gold Medallion Award-winning books and won two ECPA Book of the Year awards for What's So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew. Four of his books have sold over one million copies. Yancey lives with his wife in Colorado. Website: www.philipyancey.com

What he finds, is that gathering with other believers important and biblical, God actually honored his seeking by giving him a deeper worship level.
The author make several points as to why church is becoming irrelevant to many people. I'm just going to list a couple that I felt are important.
First, it is within human nature to become bored with the same people, places and things. That is why Paul encourages us to be content in all things. We must make commitment and rely on God to help us honor them.
Second, many Christians have come to believe that they are supposed to be entertained on Sunday morning. A jazzed up worship band, a pastor who peppers his sermon with humor, and the general opinion of what I'm I getting out of this. Now please don't get me wrong having these things in a worship service are not wrong or bad, but a lot of Christians have forgotten that church is for worshiping God. These things should enhance your worship experience, not replace them.
The author uses many personal stories to help the reader walk through the different phases in a believers spiritual walk. It never fails to amaze me how God places a book in my path right when I need it. It helped me to remember that first and foremost I am at church to worship God and server others. If I get anything else out of it, then that's a blessing for me.
This is a small book only about 100 pages. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. This is a gem of a book.

Thank Philip Yancey for writeing such a down to earth and right on book. I have searched many years myself for a church that I can't wait to go to. Still am but getting closer. Thank you.
Amy5 Stars Out Of 5September 30, 2003AmyShalom to all~May the peace of God be with you all~Philip Yancey is my favorite Chrisitan author and I read a lot of his books because I enjoy his writing and topics he talks about in his books. However,I read this book not by choice but by necessity. I was struggling with the very same topic Philip Yancey talked about in the book. I read it a while ago, but I still remember the last paragraph of the book because it gave me a reason to serve church again with all I've received from God. I want to recommend this book to those who are struggling in faith and especially those whose struggle is due to fellow Christians not because of God.
