Tell us a little about yourself. Dr. Brooke L. Small grew up in Fort Worth, earned his bachelors degree in chemistry from Texas A&M University, and his Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina. He holds over 25 U.S. patents, and is employed as a scientist in the petrochemical industry. He has served as a deacon, elder, treasurer, and teacher in the local church, and lives with his wife Lisamarie and their four children near Houston, Texas. All six family members are involved in Bible Study Fellowship. When Brooke is not involved in the above activities, he likes to keep up with Aggie and Tar Heel sports, his long-loved Metroplex professional teams, and his racquetball game.
What was your motivation behind this project? Is church ever difficult for you? Do you wonder why some relationships seem so tough? Do you wish your leaders could be on the same page? Do you ever wonder why the money goes where it goes, or why decisions are made a certain way? Do your doctrinal questions get answered? Are people matched with ministries that utilize their gifts? Is your congregation growing spiritually, or just spinning its wheels? This book - in one respect - is about struggling in church. It is for people who are largely beyond the questions of whether they really need to go to church, or how they should do church, but are far more interested in how they should be the church. It is for people who arent ready to throw in the towel, but are unwilling to accept the status quo - either in their own lives, or in the life of their church. At its core, this book is about discipleship, and how the Great Commission should impact every area of our lives. Because Christ calls his disciples to obey him completely, the content of this book will vary sometimes considering a specific topic, in other places focusing on our relationship with God, and at times relying on personal testimony and story-telling. The wriitng should appeal to readers who want to have their minds renewed by a deep and practical experience. The story is about the decline of a small Bible church, showing how Gods sovereignty and love give his people comfort and joy in the presence of trials. This narrative is interspersed with chapters on topics such as leadership, unity, vision, marriage, safety, repentance, the Bible, and even death. All 19 chapters of the book have bullet summaries at the beginning, and questions for reflection and action at the end. This book is ideal for study during personal quiet times, or for study as part of a group study. The biblical teaching is given great attention, and the topics addressed should start many healthy discussions.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I would like for people in the church to give more careful consideration to their ways, as God instructed the people in Haggai's day. We must become more diligent, more circumspect, in the way we think, and in the way we live. A true passion for God's Word, understood both practically and deeply, is foundational for producing a hunger for obedience. When we read and study the scriptures consistently, we are developing our prayer lives as well. This is because God speaks to us through his Word; the Bible is God's half of the prayer conversation! When we love it, everything in our lives becomes more better...especially our churches!
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? First and foremost, I was brought into contact with a sovereign God who has everything under his control, even when I don't understand everything. The glimpses of Providence that he has shown me have been a great motivation in my life to take one step at a time, with my hope fixed on what he will do.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? James Montgomery Boice, Charles Ryrie, J. I. Packer, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Hugh Ross, The Christian Research Journal, Craig Groeschel, Petra, Skillet, Chris Thomlin, The Resurrection Band, and countless classic hymns
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This book is great for either an extended period of reading, or in short bursts of a chapter at a time. The story is chronological, but the chapters can be digested as fairly self-contained stories or topics. I truly believe you will be blessed by this book, and pray God's Spirit will use it to draw you into a closer walk with the God of the Bible and the Head of your church.
