C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English literature at Oxford University until 1954 when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. His major contributions in literary criticism, childrens literature, fantasy literature, and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include The Chronicles of Narnia, Out of the Silent Planet, The Four Loves, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity.

Both my fourth grader and I are Narnia fans. This book set is very suitable for young readers to carry around or travel. But the layout and the clarity of prints can be improved. We enjoyed it.

This edition, which was produced in anticipation of the 2005 movie release, is perfect for the price...an inexpensive boxed set. The books are illustrated: b&w sketches appear on almost every turn of the page. This is a great feature for the 3rd-grader reading a fun adventure story for the first time, or for the parent/teacher reading one to a younger child. However, I find myself looking over my shoulder when reading these on my lunch break at work...kind of embarrassing to be observed reading a child's book. Did I mention, though, that these are terrifically wonderful stories even--or perhaps especially--as an adult?! Read them, regardless of your age, and regardless of your choice of editions!!!

I got these for our church library so that the truths presented in the books can be read by our children.

I can't even tell you how many times I've read these books. I absolutely love these stories!!! I grew up watching "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe" animated cartoon..(my favorite movie as a child)..& my brothers introduced me to the books when I was about 8. These were the first books I ever bought for myself, & it's one purchase that I've never once regretted. :)
--------These are wonderful allegory, yet they aren't stuck in a religious rut. C.S. 'Jack' Lewis did an excellent job of making Narnia believable, friendly to all readers, yet he gave the books deeper meaning for those who look for it. Every book is a gem. They are all enjoyable, whether read seperately or as a unit. I recommend them to EVERYONE. They're great fun even if you aren't looking for the deeper meanings. I will warn you though.. they're like chips.. you can't have just one. (laughs)
-------The relationship between Lucy & Aslan is my favorite. It reminds me that child-like faith is all it takes to find 'The Lion'. :) The gentle beckoning of 'DearHeart' has brought me to tears numerous times. Very sweet!
-------I highly recommend the Focus On The Family Radio Theatre stories on audio as well. They're fantastic! They portray the feelings & emotions behind the characters & their relationships beautifully.

I have a 10 year old son with a learning disablity. He has always struggled in reading. I first bought the Narnia CD's and he fell in love with them all. He listens to them over and over again. I then bought the Further Up and Further In Unit Study. He is now reading the books and actually enjoys it even though it is a challenge for him. I greatly encourage all with children to purchase the CD's and books. I feel that the spiritual aspect of these books can not be praised enough.

I started with 'Narnia' as an elementary school student, but quit at 'Dawn Treader', because the Isle of Dreams scared me a little. I quickly picked them up again a few years later and devoured them! They're my absolute all-time favorite books, and I've read them over and over in the last 14 years, never tiring of them and always discovering something new. The allegory is breathtaking at times, and it helped me to understand so much in my Christian walk.
A few years back, I had a desire to find more of Lewis's works. I discovered the 'Space Trilogy' (Definitely for more mature readers, but even more eye-opening spiritual truths embedded in it!), as well as 'Bowen', an early Lewis work, written when he was a child.
I recommend ANYTHING Lewis!!!!!!!
