Publisher's Description

Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations?

Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet.

But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

Sometimes God sends us a miracle in a way that we would never expect. In this case it is in the form of a scruffy, dirty, but oh so lovable dog.

Betty Kowalski really hasn't had the desire to celebrate Christmas in several years, in fact every year she seems to be less in mood than the year before. The neighborhood that she has lived in for over forty years appears to be going downhill at an alarming pace, starting with the young man who has taken over the house next door. When a dog appears in her back yard and her granddaughter Avery appears at her front door, Betty begins her journey back to remembering just what Christmas is all about.

I really liked this book. It was a fun book filled with wonderful characters. I really enjoyed walking with Betty through her self- imposed isolation to finding community again. When we first met Betty, she has lost her connection with God. Although she still goes to church and helps out when she is needed, her love for her neighbor is gone. She finds herself second guessing her decisions, envy her friends and judging those that appear to be different from her.

Her granddaughter Avery was a breath of fresh air. She brought heart to the story, even though her story was not so good. She represented the person who struggles through life, yet refused to let life weigh her down. She sees the good in people and the silver lining in every opportunity.

The book ended a little too abruptly for my taste. I would have liked to see the loose ends tied up instead of leaving it to the readers imagination, but that I just my personal opinion. I would have also liked to have had the Christmas story somewhere within these pages, seeing as this is a book written for the holiday. But all in all it was a good read.

Funny, Lively, inspiring.. just some words to describe this lovely story of a dog and a grandmother that knew how to inspire life into a grumpy neighbor and a disobedient teenager..

This story is about an old lady who reminds me of Ebenzer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. Unhappy & not on the best terms with her family, she feels that the Holidays are nothing to look forward to. The dog doesn't even enter the story until about halfway thru the book.

This book was hard for me to get into, I almost stopped reading it because the first couple chapters were so depressing & boring. Once I got past that, the book got better. Nevertheless, I never liked the main character (maybe I am too young to understand her, I am closer in age to her granddaughter).
