ChristiansQuest is a fresh retelling of the classic allegory, Little Pilgrims Progress. Christian is on an epic quest from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. The road is long and difficult, and many interesting characters show up along the way. Some of his companions help Christian and encourage him in his quest, while others try to point him back to the City of Destruction. Will Christian make it to the Celestial City? Join Christian in this adventure-filled quest to find out…
Christians Quest comes loaded with helpful features: discussion questions, an appendix of unfamiliar words, an allegorical key, and realistic black and white ink illustrations throughout. These tools ensure that each person joining Christian in his quest will have all he or she needs to understand the story behind the story the Gospel message in all of its relevance to our everyday lives.
MELVIN PATTERSON, JR., a native of the Westside of Chicago, is a self-taught artist and storyteller whose passion is sharing his God-given abilities with others, especially children. He is most proud of his current art project - creating and overseeing a 180 ft. mural being painted by children ages 5-12 at Circle Urban Ministries, illustrating Little Pilgrim¿s Progress in an urban context. Working as a maintenance supervisor by day, he enjoys serving God with all of his gifts and abilities whenever he has the opportunity.
True Northhttp://22.214.171.124/~truenou1/Age: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5New Allegory for YA Readers & Great graphics!August 28, 2013True Northhttp://126.96.36.199/~truenou1/Age: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Sensitivity Caution: Most tweens can handle reading this book. But for those parents who want to know what's in a book before their child reads it, here it is: Modern ‘urban' street vernacular (that adults may not understand) is used by bad guys in the story. Fear not! There's a glossary of ‘Words & Phrases' in the back. Words such as ‘sucka,' ‘fool,' and ‘kick yo' lil butt' are used sparingly. One scene of senseless gang violence, one fierce battle with the Devil, and a martyr's burning at the stake are portrayed. All this is redeemed in the overall story as being wrong behavior coming from unsaved characters living in a bad place. This is not overdone or prevalent in the writing, but is used strictly to paint a picture of how bad the unsaved world is. The main character earnestly turns away from characters who display this behavior. Also, this is an allegory, it's not reality, so kids should understand (as in cartoons) that they cannot jump off cliffs and survive.
True to the Word? Yes
Christian was a ‘street tough' urban kid living in Destruction City (D'City), a bad place, filled with bad people, and ruled by the Wicked Prince. Christian's Gramps was a follower of the King and his Son, the Good Shepherd, and taught Christian to live his life according to the Book, which he gave to Christian before he died and went to the Celestial City. When Christian realized that the life of football, gangs, & girls gave him a false sense of security, he began reading the Book, which his Gramps called his roadmap for life. After reading the Book, D'City no longer held the same charm for Christian. Christian made a personal commitment to following the Kings narrow path, and he set out on a journey to find the Celestial City. His journey was anything but easy.
Join Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. Meet colorful characters along the way, like Evangelist, who teaches Christian about God, Worldly Wise, who is wise for all the wrong reasons, and Talkative, who talks a good game, but doesn't walk the walk. Have a conversation with Ignorance, who tells you that all good people go to Heaven. Fight with Christian as he battles the Wicked Prince, hand-to-hand, in a fight for his life. Experience the wicked city of Vanity Fair with Christian and his friend, Faithful. See how easy it is for Christian and Faithful to be side-tracked by the bright lights and shiny things, and how those things got them into serious trouble. The trouble of prison for them both and a martyr's death for Faithful. Go with Christian as he carries his burden through places like Dead Man's Swamp, the Hill of Difficulty, the Haunted Valley, Palace Beautiful, and the Shepherd's Gate. Pass through the Valley of Peace and enter the Celestial City with Christian. Hear the Shining One say "This way" to the Good Shepherd.
Young Adults will feel at home with the popular fantasy style of writing that they seem to gravitate towards today, and they will also love the fabulous graphic art depicting scenes from the book.
Great Addition: A wonderful ‘Allegory Word Chart' in the back of the book connects the Characters, Places & Phrases to their Biblical meaning.
Jacqueline Busch & Melvin Patterson did a great job in their adaptation and art, and because of their dedication and hard work, this age-old story of Christian and his ‘quest' will touch many young readers in a positive ‘Christian' way.
