Publisher's Description

Jane Austen, Sergeant York, Saint Patrick—What did they have in common?

Two thousand years and still going strong: that’s the story of Christianity. And while the Christian martyrs and saints and orators may have gotten more press, the fact is the faith has been carried through history in the hearts and deeds of believers who—though beloved to us now—were simply living ordinary lives of devotion.

“It would be almost impossible to imagine ten people more different from each other than these,” editor John Perry says. “This [is] the first truth of Christian living: anybody, anywhere can be a champion of the faith, an example and inspiration to all who follow.”

There’s no dry biography here, though. Each story teems with fresh insight. D. L. Moody did some of his most powerful evangelizing by befriending ragged street children in Chicago. William F. Buckley never delivered a sermon, yet a Christian worldview informed his erudite, witty, output in print and broadcasting. To compose her poems, Anne Bradstreet had to understand science, history, the Bible, and literature, not to mention the political scene in both Massachusetts and England. You’ll look with new eyes, also, on the lives of George Washington Carver, Jane Austen, Galileo, Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergeant York, John Bunyan, and Saint Patrick. You might think you know their stories . . . but you don’t. Not yet.

For lovers of biography, for homeschool or study groups, for anyone seeking encouragement in the Christian walk, 10 Christians Everyone Should Know is a valuable resource.

This book provides short biographies of ten prominent individuals from

western civilization. This includes venerated saints, such as Saint

Patrick, famous authors (Jane Austin), and modern political

commentators (William F. Buckley, Jr.). The purpose of the book is to

show each of these individuals' contributions to society and how those

contributions were grounded in that person's strong Christian faith.

I was looking forward to the book since it contained biographies of

several people I thought were interesting. I was already aware of the

Christian faith of most of the subjects but I was intrigued that

authors Anne Bradstreet and Jane Austin were included in the list. I

was also surprised to see J. S. Bach listed.

Not all of the biographies turned out to be as interesting as I would

have liked but I was particularly drawn to Galileo and Austin. I was

already dimly aware that Galileo had a relationship with Christianity

but I didn't know the details. He certainly was a non-conformist when

it came to his faith but his faith was solid none-the-less. The

parallels between his conflicts concerning the structure of the solar

system and the modern conflicts dealing with origins of the universe

    are striking.

I also enjoyed the Jane Austin biography. Somehow Jane Austin turned

out to be just exacly what I thought she would be. Her personality

and character come through well in her books.

The writing of the books was a bit disjointed. Most of the

biographies were written by different people and the differences in

writing style and ability were quite severe. It kept me from being

able to read the entire book smoothly. Despite these issues, I

enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others as a light

introduction to the 10 characters in the book.

I received this book as a part of the booksneeze.com blogger book

    review program.

First, have to say that I rated the "Meets Expectations" as just average because I really expected to read a book about 10 people I knew already. That was not the case though!

10 Christians Everyone Should Know is comprised of 10 brief biographies of influential historical figures. You start out in early history with Saint Patrick and you end up in semi-recent times with William F. Buckley Jr. Well-written and organized. Would make a good supplement for homeschool high school or advanced junior high history. Not only will you learn what these people had in common, you'll learn why their influence is important to you today.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from Thomas Nelson in exchange for an honest review.

    10 Christians Everyone Should Know

Lives of the Faithful & What They Mean To You, by John Perry, editor, is a biography lover's book.

Jane Austen, Sergeant York, Saint Patrick—What did they have in common? "It would be almost impossible to imagine ten people more different from each other than these," editor John Perry says. "This [is] the first truth of Christian living: anybody, anywhere can be a champion of the faith, an example and inspiration to all who follow."

There's no dry biography here, though. Each story teems with fresh insight. D. L. Moody did some of his most powerful evangelizing by befriending ragged street children in Chicago. William F. To compose her poems, Anne Bradstreet had to understand science, history, the Bible, and literature, not to mention the political scene in both Massachusetts and England. You'll look with new eyes, also, on the lives of George Washington Carver, Jane Austen, Galileo, Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergeant York, John Bunyan, and Saint Patrick. You might think you know their stories . . . but you don't. Not yet.

So after reading their stories, these 10 folks had a common thread - their faith in God. The lessons learned in how they chose to live their lives may help you find the determination, the courage, the energy, to devote your life to living the way God needs you to live. We need more books to share the simple, condensed stories of people that set the example of never giving up, of helping others before themselves, of making a positive difference wherever we live.

I did like this book and will recommend it to all ages. I would also recommend this nifty little book for homeschool or study groups, or for anyone seeking encouragement in the Christian walk.
