Jane Austen, Sergeant York, Saint PatrickWhat did they have in common?
Two thousand years and still going strong: thats the story of Christianity. And while the Christian martyrs and saints and orators may have gotten more press, the fact is the faith has been carried through history in the hearts and deeds of believers whothough beloved to us nowwere simply living ordinary lives of devotion.
It would be almost impossible to imagine ten people more different from each other than these, editor John Perry says. This [is] the first truth of Christian living: anybody, anywhere can be a champion of the faith, an example and inspiration to all who follow.
Theres no dry biography here, though. Each story teems with fresh insight. D. L. Moody did some of his most powerful evangelizing by befriending ragged street children in Chicago. William F. Buckley never delivered a sermon, yet a Christian worldview informed his erudite, witty, output in print and broadcasting. To compose her poems, Anne Bradstreet had to understand science, history, the Bible, and literature, not to mention the political scene in both Massachusetts and England. Youll look with new eyes, also, on the lives of George Washington Carver, Jane Austen, Galileo, Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergeant York, John Bunyan, and Saint Patrick. You might think you know their stories . . . but you dont. Not yet.For lovers of biography, for homeschool or study groups, for anyone seeking encouragement in the Christian walk, 10 Christians Everyone Should Know is a valuable resource.
John Perry graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University, with additional studies at University College, Oxford, England. Before beginning his career as an author in 1997, he was an award-winning advertising copywriter and radio producer. John has published 21 books as an author, collaborator, or ghostwriter. He is the biographer of Sgt. Alvin York, Mary Custis Lee (wife of Robert E. Lee and great granddaughter of Martha Washington), and George Washington Carver. Among other books, he has also written about the 1925 Scopes monkey trial (Monkey Business, with Marvin Olasky, B&H Publishing, 2005) and contemporary prison reform (God Behind Bars, Thomas Nelson, 2006). He is a two-time Gold Medallion finalist and Lincoln Prize nominee. He lives in Nashville.
Annie KateCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Source of Endless Rabbit TrailsMarch 20, 2013Annie KateCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3Because biographies are an important part of homeschooling, I jumped at the chance to review 10 Christians Everyone Should Know: Lives of the Faithful and What They Mean to You. However, though I am an avid reader, I was initially so disappointed with this book that I had to put it away.
You see, the first chapter-about Saint Patrick-included a revolting quotation that was completely unnecessary to include in a mere summary. The second chapter-about Galileo-was full of choppy sentences and did not explain why Galileo was among the 10 Christians everyone should know. By the time I had gotten this far, I did not want to read another word, and therefore ignored the book for a few months.
However, after these two chapters the book improved dramatically. The mini-biographies of Anne Bradstreet, John Bunyan, J.S. Bach, Jane Austen, D.L. Moody, George Washington Carver, Sergeant York, and William F. Buckley Jr. were well-written and captivating, with no more gruesome quotations. I learned new facts, ‘met' interesting people I already knew well and others I'd never heard of, and enjoyed seeing the Christian side of these people that is often ignored in secular biographies.
Though other Christians may have gotten more attention, it's interesting to dig into the lives and choices of this preacher, soldier, housewife, author, composer, bishop, and more. In the words of editor John Perry: "It would be almost impossible to imagine ten people more different from each other than these." Every human is unique, and so are Christians. Every believer can share his or her faith and inspire others in his or her own way.
Sharing that message seems to be one goal of this book. The other goal is, obviously, to get you to buy the Christian Encounters biographies these summaries have been based on. And that has worked; I'm considering getting the books about Jane Austen and J. S. Bach.
Whereas at first I planned never to give this ebook to my teens to read, I am now wondering if it is possible to remove the Patrick chapter and give them the rest_or at least tell them not to bother with that first chapter. After all, the other mini-biographies are great: Christian, short, interesting, and informative—with a huge list of end notes for further information and a decent index.
This is could be a worthwhile book for your homeschool and, with its great end notes, a source of endless rabbit trails.
Disclosure I received a free review copy of this ebook from Booksneeze in order to share my honest opinions.
AcesBuffGreenwood, INAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5It's a great book, but it could be even better.October 17, 2012AcesBuffGreenwood, INAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I chose to read Ten Christians Everyone Should Know because I'm intrigued by the stories of people of faith and I must confess I knew very little about the people discussed in this book. I think books like these are a must-have for any home library. The great thing about Ten Christians Everyone Should Know is that the end of each chapter gives you the name of a more complete telling of the person's story. While I realize this is a marketing technique (each of the biographies happen to be published by Thomas Nelson Publishing, the very same publishing house that published Ten Christians. Convenient, huh?), I appreciated having that knowledge available. It's kind of tough to find some quality biographies about people like Jane Austen or Johann Sebastian Bach, and I will be searching out some of these biographies because some of the brief biographies I read in this book made me want to know more about the people.
The full title of this book is Ten Christians Everyone Should Know: Lives of the Faithful And What They Mean To You (emphasis mine). I don't think every biography in this book really touches on the "what they mean to you" part. If told well, the stories of Christians like Bach, Galileo, Jane Austen, Sergeant York, and others, should be inspiring and challenging to the reader. They should force us to look at our own lives and see if we're using our talents and opportunities to God's glory. Some of these biographies do a fabulous job of doing just that. Others, unfortunately, fell flat for me. At times that left me disappointed with the book. But that was just a few times. And that was probably because I expected too much from such a relatively short book. With that being said, however, Ten Christians is definitely worth picking up. I'm pretty sure you'll discover something you never knew before about someone who was influential in his or her world.

MaryRuthMidwestAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A great reading investment!September 26, 2012MaryRuthMidwestAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I really loved this book. It's a compilation of excerpts from the Christian Encounters series, basically condensing and hitting the highlights from 10 of the Christians featured in that series. If you're curious about some of these historical figures but aren't sure you're curious enough to buy a complete biography of them, this book would be perfect for you! Or, if you just want to have a few quick and basic facts about these people on hand for reference, this book would also be perfect.
Personally, I've had my interest and curiosity aroused by reading this book, and I'm now eager to get the complete biographies of several of these people so I can learn more. The time spent reading this book was time well-spent, that's for sure!
I received a copy of this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for my review. A favorable review was not required. My views are my own.
