The third edition of Christianity Through the Centuries brings the reader up-to-date by discussing events and developments in the church into the 1990s. This edition has been redesigned with new typography and greatly improved graphics to increase clarity, accessibility, and usefulness. - New chapters examine recent trends and developments (expanding the last section from 2 chapters to 5) - New photos. Over 100 photos in all -- more than twice the number in the previous edition - Single-column format for greater readability and a contemporary look - Improved maps (21) and charts (39) Building on the features that have made Christianity Through the Centuries an indispensable text, the author not only explains the development of doctrines, movements, and institutions, but also gives attention to "the impact of Christianity on its times and to the mark of the times on Christianity."

I've partaken in many denominations and churches, and I have come to understand that even if the Truth is quite simple = the Bible, men seem to have an incredible ability to twist it. I think Mr. Cairns does a remarkable job in presenting a very objective history of what we all share. His picture of Christ is very vivid and clear, I cannot but agree to that. The man was obviously very sound minded - don't get me wrong here.
The only small remark I have is, being a photographer, that some of the pictures could have been printed more carefully. But the graphs are tremendous, the lists of recommended reading should feed anyone's thirst for some extra Living Water, the maps are great... I'm thrilled with this book. If Believers discussed and / or argumented / presented themselves this way, we would surely have one Body of Christ.

It is well written and maintains the adventure and historicity of its contents. The author's use of maps and diagrams including side headings make it eye-catching to follow the events.
Great for lay student, as well as those apreparing for Theological studies. The author allows the reader to develop a quest to look into the events that helped shaped the Christian thought.
Olivet Baptist ChurchWestport, OntarioAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5February 18, 2010Olivet Baptist ChurchWestport, OntarioAge: 45-54Gender: maleAn excellent overview of Church History. Very fluid, easy to read and informative. Cairns doesn't bog you down with details but writes in a way that gives you an excellent summary of special events and a good intorduction to key people in the history of God's church.

Rev. Sione Veituna5 Stars Out Of 5March 5, 2009Rev. Sione VeitunaI have being lecturing in Church History since I left Seminary in 1997. Earle Cairns' book has been the main text. I used his book while in Seminary 15 years ago, I still use it today for my B.D. classes in Church History today and recommended it still. The expanded edition is much welcomed! My students love the spirit of enthusiasm and humility history is written with. Cairns' work reflects and fosters Christ-likeness in academic work and scholarship. I appreciated very much that Zondervan keeps on publishing it and CBD keeps make it available with reasonable price. Thank you very much!
