Product Description

In This panoramic work of historical theology, Roger Olson vividly recounts the deeds and words of the apostolic fathers of the second century, the clash between the theological schools of Alexandria and Antioch, the epochal division between East and West, the revolutionary advent of the Reformation and much more -- right on up to the dazzling, sometimes dismaying fallout that has continued to shake Christians through the twentieth century. Through it all he highlights a common thread: a concern for salvation -- God's redemptive activity in forgiving and transforming sinful human beings.

As one who has studied Church History and theology for years, this book is right on. I love how the book moves through the different time periods in order. This way, one can get a real understanding as how we got to where we are today. A must for all personal liberies.

A phenomenal intro to the subject. The author lays out both the "what" and the "why" behind every major development in Christian theology.

Likely the best book I've found on this subject. Here you will be given a inside view at our Christian heritage - from its most humble beginnings, through is ecclesiastical power to the Reformation and nearly into our present century. You may be surprised at the many twists and turns that provide you today with the detailed doctrines you hold. You may be surprised at how quickly one theologian could turn from Orthodox doctrine to Heresy. But mostly, you may find how little you knew about the Christian history, of its theology, its doctrines, its church government - and all this written with all readers in mind. Without our history, we are naught!

I have an abiding interest in the subject that Dr Olson covers so extensively, & I have taught a course on this topic for several years. This is without a doubt the best book on the development of Christian theology that I have ever read, & I just finished my fourth reading of the book. Dr Olson deals with not just the history but the rationale of the developments, including modern parallels that show that practically all the theological development, orthodox or otherwise, is still with us in various guises. This is very readable yet thoroughly researched work, & I most strongly recommend it.

Perhaps the clearest treatment available in modern English. A clear and concise narrative (given the breath of material covered) that provides a satisfying level of detail.

Not a book to pick up & fly through, but one I've really enjoyed. Very thorough discussion of church history from a different perspective. This book has really made me think & examine my own beliefs. Excellent resource for systematic theology & Bible study classes who may want to understand how and why mainline doctrines are as they are, and gives a new appreciation to the depth of thought which has been devoted to Biblical issues over the centuries.
