When I purchase books for our home school, they don't always end up to be books that have glossy, full-color pictures. Sometimes they are the more humble-looking ones. But very often, humble though they may appear, they possess a writing style capable of drawing my younger students into reading their assignments with satisfaction and enjoyment. Nature Readers are just this sort of book.

For example, in Nature Reader, Book 3 (average third grade reading level), a fisherman tells stories about Old King Crab, Mr. Barnacle and his son, and the flowers of the sea, which are all really animals. At the end of one chapter, describing the business of ants, the author writes, "This seems like a fairy tale, but it is quite true. All these things can be seen if you look out for them." Some questions in these readers give the student the opportunity for little tellings (narration). These are the type of prompts: Describe a barnacle fishing party. What can you tell me about giant beetles? Why is it so hard to pull a worm out of its hole? How do ants treat each other while they are at work?

Nature Reader, Book 4 has more creatures. The author shares surprising observations of baby hummingbird activity. Nature Reader, Book 5 describes the basic parts of the human body, as well as useful and varied parts of the bodies of animals.

I have Book 1 only and I will be ordering the other four. My 8 year old son and I absolutely love this book. It teaches us all about certain insects and animals and tells how amazing our God is for creating such interesting creatures. If you are reading this to decide whether to buy them or not "get them".

My whole family enjoys these books. We took them tent camping and read them to the kids at bedtime. We told them we would only read as long as they lay quietly in their sleeping bags. It worked great.

Do not pass these up! They are so sweet and there is so much for your children to learn in them. We read these as part of our schooling, but also for pleasure. The bargain can't be beat. Each reader is at a different grade level so you will have interesting nature stories to read for several years. They are wonderful for bed time stories also because the stories are very gentle. Wonderful!
