The stories are short and contain interesting information and if I am forgetful and miss pulling the book out in a day my daughters (3 and 5) always remind me because they love to look at the pictures and hear the animal facts presented.

SenaeNashville, TNAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great science lessons for little readersMarch 3, 2012SenaeNashville, TNAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bought this nature reader for my five year old daughter. She loves science and is really enjoying learning about the different animals covered in this nature reader. There are 26 informative lessons, one animal for each letter of the alphabet, each lesson spanning two pages. We are doing 1st grade this year, and she is reading this book well with some helps from me on the more challenging words (maybe one or two per lesson). I do believe this reader would be quite challenging for most "kindergarteners". There is a statement at the beginning of the book explaining that children should be able to read this book with minimal help upon *completing* the five Christian liberty Phonics Readers. So I believe this would be a book to read at the end of Kindergarten or during first grade. Some examples in the first story: "dangerous", "stomach", "watches", "thief",
"something", "tongue", "chewing". There is a glossary in the back in a section titled "Words You Should Know" which gives definitions for words such as hollow, hibernate, camouflage, dusk, mammal, etc. The words included in the glossary are bold in the lessons. I would definitely recommend this book for children who enjoy learning about animals.
Q: Did the publisher intend this as a K reader or as a book to be read aloud to the student? It doesn't quite fit in with the same level of reading as the other K readers in that grade.
According to the publisher, students who have completed a kindergarten phonics program should be able to read this four-color book with minimal help. It includes a glossary at the back of the book to help young students understand highlighted vocabulary words in the text.
