The Christian Counselors Manual is a companion and sequel to the authors influential Competent to Counsel. It takes the approach of nouthetic counseling introduced in the earlier volume and applies it to a wide range of issues, topics, and techniques in counseling: *Who is qualified to be a counselor? *How can counselees change? *How does the Holy Spirit work? *What role does hope play? *What is the function of language? *How do we ask the right questions? *What often lies behind depression? *How do we deal with anger? *What is schizophrenia? These and hundreds more questions are answered in this comprehensive resource for the Christian counselor. A full set of indexes, a detailed table of contents, and a full complement of diagrams and forms make this an outstanding reference book for Christian counselors.
Jay E. Adams (PhD, University of Missouri) is a former director of advanced studies and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, as well as a retired pastor. He has written over fifty books on pastoral ministry, preaching, counseling, Bible study, and Christian living. His books include Competent to Counsel, The Christian Counselors Manual, and Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible.
R A LayTexasAge: Over 65Gender: male3 Stars Out Of 5Great book for counseling principlesNovember 22, 2013R A LayTexasAge: Over 65Gender: maleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2The book has excellent biblical references but the author appears on many areas to go "extreme" in how he applies them in counseling. One gets the impression that his approach is rather simplistic - "this is what the Bible says, so it should work, don't try anything else or go anywhere else". On the other hand one must understand that Dr. Adams stands on a confrontational (nouthetic) platform in all of his counseling methodology and that is perhaps why he comes across as taking a hard stance on his opinions. I recommend this book for learning about counseling biblical principles but would balance the study with other books, still biblically based, but more sensitive on the application side. Good book as part of a collection to increase counseling knowledge.

Dr. Adams speaks from years of experience and study of God's Word. This is a tremendous work. I do not "buy into" his positional stand on Reformed Theology; however, very little of that comes forth in this Book.
YeduthunGyeonggido, South Korea5 Stars Out Of 5A must for every pastor and church leaderDecember 14, 2010YeduthunGyeonggido, South KoreaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is a classic in Biblical Counseling. Despite coming out decades ago, the issues it deals with are just as relevant today as then. Dr. Adams knows what he's talking about from both the counseling side and Biblical side. He knows his Word and how to apply it to hurting, sinful people!
One of the great travesties in the modern church is the myth of "Christian Psychology." Jay Adams makes an excellent argument (both in this book and many others) that the two simply don't go together. Although there can be "organic" problems, the vast majority of what is considered psychological "disease" can be taken care of by the Word of God being lovingly applied through the power of the Holy Spirit.
One caveat with this book, however, is that Adams occasionally brings in his very staunch reformed theology. This is particularly troubling when he talks about demonic possession, but don't let his few theological quirks keep you from reading an essential masterpiece on caring for souls.
Donald5 Stars Out Of 5April 20, 2008DonaldI'm not sure why someone has to "beware of end time events" to quote the other review. This book is a must for any pastor who truly desire to counsel the members of his flock in a biblical way. Adams provides amazing insights and gives many practical ways to implement them into a church.
