A songwriting "artist," Rice blends transformative lyrics and melodies into vivid pictures of life framed by faith. Includes the jazz-influenced "So Much for My Sad Song," "Kids Again," "Pardon My Dust," "Here Come Those Eyes," the title track, and more.
Rating:

Playing it safe has never been good enough for singer/songwriter and industry veteran Chris Rice. Following the success of his last album, Rice returns with a collection of new songs full of introspective lyrics and beautiful musical arrangements.
His sixth studio record,
What a Heart is Beating For, starts with “So Much for My Sad Song,” a “glass-half-full” track he attempted to write after a fan suggested he try to write a sad song. The title track, produced by Monroe Jones (Third Day), takes a poignant look at the heart of life and love—taking a risk and giving all of yourself. “Tell Me the Story Again” conveys the gospel in a fresh way, while “Pardon My Dust,” inspired by a hotel renovation sign, captures a life in progress. Other stand-out tracks include the nostalgic “Kids Again,” the James Taylor-esque “Love Is Gonna Break Through,” and the romantic “Punch Lines and Ironies.”
With a solid career already under his belt, Rice’s next step on his creative journey is a solid success. It’s inspiring to hear an artist willing to open a new coloring book and color outside the lines.

Not as inspiring as his previous efforts. I'm sad to see more songs about "life" or "love" than Christ or Christianity. :( Disappointing.

Another great Chris Rice. So loving and very inspiring it makes you want to be kinder and gentler.

Surprising and yet reminiscent, there is an honesty to this work that is inviting and thought provoking. This will wind through my Cd player for quite some time

I love Chris Rice and thought this was the best yet.I'm thirteen years old and love this man's music. He is truly gifted and God is clearly behind his work.

Great fun CD. Has a jazzy feel to many of the songs. My teenagers like it too.

This new sound of Mr Rice's just doesn't seem to fit him. I like a few of the songs here, but the lyrics and music overall are not as inspiring as on his previous efforts. I'd actually rather listen to Amusing, as some of the songs there are more reflective of the Chris Rice I know and love. I guess my favorite tracks are Pardon My Dust (Love it, love it, love it) and What a Heart is Beating For.

Honestly, as a major Chris Rice fan, I was somewhat disappointed. It's a fun listen, but the lyrics are lacking the depth of his earlier works.
