Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Let's get the dislikes out of the way: Screw bugs in my popcorn definitely a dislike! In fact, this little shield-backed fellow winds up in my next novel, as my protagonist crunches into one by accident while eating, yep, popcorn! I sing and play the piano, both for my own pleasure and in ministry. I design my own cards and bookmarks under the name, “Artistic Expressions by Grandma Eileen.” But my biggest interest these days is playing with my six grandchildren, ages four and under. When they're around, you can find me under a homemade tent in the living room reading stories with a penlight, racing matchbox cars across the kitchen linoleum, or playing dress up. While I've been to Canada, several parts of India, and Uganda, I have yet to tour Europe. I've endured several layovers in Europe on route to other places, but never any extended trips in Europe. That's where I would go, especially Ireland, Greece, and Switzerland.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Four years ago when I was brainstorming characters and plot for Book 3 in the Born for India trilogy, my youngest daughter, Stephanie, alerted me to the horrors of sex trafficking. A short time later, I discovered that her older sister, Michelle, shared the same burden to the point of spending sleepless nights in tears over these abused women and children. Thus, Punita, my eleven-year-old Nepali protagonist, a victim of the sex trade, was born.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Awareness and action. Prayerfully, readers will not only enjoy an intriguing story, but will also be moved to help children who are caught up in the horrors of sex trafficking.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Once I had my main characters in place (missionary couple and Nepali girl), I started researching the sex industry. I watched DVDs, read books, articles, and news stories. I discovered some shocking statistics confirmed by Destiny Rescue USA, Inc, a Christian organization dedicated to freeing and rehabilitating children who have been sexually exploited and working with high-risk families and villages to prevent their children from being trafficked. * Twenty-seven million slaves exist in our world today. * There are about two million women in prostitution in Asia and half of them are children. * Every minute, two people are trafficked across international borders. * Every ten minutes a woman or child is trafficked into the U.S. * Every year, 200,000 American girls are at risk for sex trafficking. * Every day 3000-5000 children are being sold or lured into prostitution. * The International Labor Office estimates that the slave trade generates $32 billion in revenue each year. Punita is a composite profile of a poverty-stricken Nepali girl sold by her father to traffickers thinking he is sending his daughter off to the city to work as a maid for a wealthy family. The Oasis Compound missionaries introduced in Books one and two travel along to Chosen Ones with spotlight on Dan and Yvonne Pratt, administrator and teacher in the orphanage school. In the midst of writing Punita's story, I was moved to sponsor a girl who has been rescued and now lives in a safe house where she receives counsel, care, education, and a gospel witness.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Whenever I want to immerse myself in the craft of writing fiction or enjoy a good read, I turn to Francine Rivers and Angela Hunt books. My favorites.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Look for: Second Chance, a stand-alone novel which has also been contracted by OakTara to be released in 2012. Back cover blurp: Mave Robertson wants the life back in her marriage. Dareece Jackson just wants a life. Could they be the answer to each other’s dream? Mave Robertson, a recent empty nester, wants the fire back in her marriage, but her husband, Jerry, remains aloof. Is he having an affair? Midlife crisis? When a neighbor suggests she “get a life,” Mave accepts the challenge and volunteers at an inner city teen ministry where she is thrown into a culture of drugs, gangs, and unwed teens. She soon discovers a friend whom she can help, but she never guesses that he might be the cure for both her stale marriage and her crumbling relationship with her father. There is something in Mave Robertson’s purse that Dareece Jackson wants . . . and he’ll stop at nothing to get it.
