Covering her courtship and marriage to Steven Curtis Chapman, struggles for emotional balance, and living with grief, Mary Beth's story is our story--wondering where God is when the worst happens. In Choosing to SEE, she shows how she wrestles with God even as she has allowed him to write her story--both during times of happiness and those of tragedy. Readers will hear firsthand about the loss of her daughter, the struggle to heal, and the unexpected path God has placed her on. Even as difficult as life can be, Mary Beth Chapman Chooses to SEE. Includes a 16-page full color photo insert.
Ellen Vaughn is a New York Times bestselling author and inspirational speaker. Her recent books include It's All About Him, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times nonfiction list. In addition to her nonfiction work, Vaughn is an award-winning novelist. Vaughn and her husband Lee live in the Washington, DC area.
Every time God pushed Chapman away from her plan, He strengthened her for what lay ahead. Through true stories of all varieties, she shows her readers this and she always emphasizes how it was in no way part of her life game plan. Every chapter ends with a profound set of insightful thoughts: things the author learned via her struggles.
When she lost her daughter on May 21, 2008, Mary Beth Chapman was shaken, thinking and wishing it was only a bad dream. She had to let go of her own will and lean on God more than ever before and trust that He was doing the best.
Choosing to SEE is a powerful book. Filled with personal stories and life lessons, it shows its readers what Mary Beth Chapman endured and how God was with her throughout. A Christian struggling with his or her faith or dealing with suffering in life would be greatly encouraged by this book encouraged to see how God is working and what bigger plans He has for us all. Momof3North CarolinaAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Full of Love, Humor, and HonestyOctober 23, 2015Momof3North CarolinaAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I'm late in the game getting my hands on this book but I trust in God's timing. I'm a pastor's wife and this book has been added to my "Give When..." pile. When women miscarry, I give them "I'll Hold You in Heaven." Now, thank you Lord, I have a book on hand to give parents who are grieving the passing of older children. As soon as I finish writing this review, I'm ordering one for a mother in our church whose 18-month old drowned in a pool. I'm also ordering a copy for the first cousins who were outside playing with the child and thought she had gone inside the house. Each one will identify with someone in Mary Beth Chapman's book.
"Choosing to See" is full of love--massive, God-sized love. Chapman and Vaughn do an excellent job of conveying that undeniable love in the midst of confusion, disappointment, and agonizing heartbreak.
You'll come away with a great introduction to Mary Beth Chapman. She shares her struggles, her flaws, and her hilarious sense of humor. Reading late one night, I was afraid I would wake my family with snorts of laughter when I read Mary Beth's account of white-water rafting!
I loved how she prefaced each chapter with a few lyrics from songs (many were Steven Curtis Chapman's) which reflected what was taking place in their lives.
This book is well-written and so engaging I had a hard time putting it down. It is a must-read for anyone who is grieving the death of a loved one--especially a child. And the book is for those who long to understand and be a comfort to those who are grieving.

Christianfictionaddiction5 Stars Out Of 5A Precious GiftOctober 20, 2011ChristianfictionaddictionQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Equal parts inspiring and sobering, Choosing to SEE has the ability to change people's lives. Mary Beth Chapman clearly writes from the depths of her heart, with no hiding behind "Christianese" or pretending to be the "perfect Christian". Her story is one that will bring tears to your eyes and hope to your heart as you realize that although you will go through tough times, God is holding your hand the whole way through. God promises to never leave us nor forsake us, and Chapman's story so aptly displays this promise to us.
The authors display great skill with the pen, and have written this moving account in an easy to read way that kept the pages flying through my hands. Their candid manner is so refreshing as we walk with the family through the struggles of their marriage, the reality of depression, the joy of adoption, the tragedy that came with the death of their child. How amazing God's grace is that He sustains the family throughout!
People who are struggling through tragedy should pick up this book. People who are worried they are not deserving of God's grace should pick up this book. People who don't want to admit they are Christians struggling with depression should pick up this book. Parents who have tasted the same loss as the Chapmans in losing a child should pick up this book. A message of comfort, of hope, of permission to be human, that you don't have to pretend to be perfect, that God never gives up on us - this is the message that breathes through Choosing to SEE.
Written with great courage, this book deserves a full recommendation, and receives 5 out of 5 stars.
