Beverly Lewis is my favorite Amish fiction author. Child of Mine was written with her husband, David Lewis. In a way, it is a bit different than most of Lewis' novels. However, it has quickly become one of my favorites! I loved this book! There is drama, romance, and intrigue. It will keep you turning the pages!

In Child of Mine, Kelly Maines is one of the lead characters. She is searching for her daughter who was kidnapped eight years ago. Following many leads, and finding many dead ends, she finally receives word from her private investigator that there is an eight-year-old girl living in Ohio who matches the profile of her missing daughter.

Jack Livingston is a flight instructor living in Ohio. He is raising his brother's daughter because his brother and sister-in-law were killed in an accident and wished for Jack to become her guardian in the event of their deaths. Jack adores his niece, Natalie. She has become his world. Natalie's parents could not have children of their own and were thrilled to adopt her as an infant. Sadly, they would not survive to see Natalie grow up.

Laura Mast is the Amish nanny who is helping Jack to care for Natalie. Laura was hired by Jack's brother and his wife after they adopted Natalie. She is devoted to the child, so remains with her when she moves to Jack's home. Natalie would like nothing more than to have her Uncle Jack marry Laura. The three have been living a content life together for years. Because Laura is Amish, Jack believes it would be impossible to have a romantic relationship with her. Laura is originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but has been shunned by her family there, so she moved to Ohio to live with her cousin who is a member of the "Beachy Amish" order. Jack wonders about Laura's shunning, but all that Laura will say about her past is that the door is forever closed to her regarding reconciling with her family in Lancaster. She can never go back.

Kelly Maines enters Jack's life when she asks for an introductory flight at his flight school. Jack has no idea that Kelly is really in Ohio to find out if Natalie might be her daughter. Jack and Kelly become close, developing a romantic relationship. It all falls apart when Jack discovers that Kelly has been deceiving him. He realizes she has only been using him to get to Natalie...or has she?

There are so many twists in the plot that I had no idea what was coming next. It was a book I could not put down, so I literally read this novel in one sitting. I was very surprised by the conclusion! Most times when I read a book, I have a general idea about what will happen by the end of the story. Child of Mine was a shocker! It is absolutely a MUST READ!!!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.

Child of Mine by Beverly & David Lewis
Jack Livingston is raising his adopted niece Natalie after his brother and wife passed away. Natalie is a sweet child that would love nothing more than to know her birth mother and have a mother to call her own. She plays match maker with her Amish nanny Laura and Jack. Kelly is searching for her daughter that was kidnapped eight years ago, is it possible that Natalie is her missing daughter?
Child of Mind is has a surprise ending I never saw coming. The characters are dynamic and well thought out. David and Beverly Lewis did a glorious job with this book. The way they handled the adoption story was so real, the emotions of all the characters just come to life. You can’t help but feel their pain and joy. This book is not your run of the mill Amish story I assumed it would be. I give Child of Mine 5 stars and highly recommend it. If you like Amish, Christian, romance and a little suspense then this is a great book for you.
I want to thank the authors Beverly & David Lewis and publisher Bethany House for bringing a good clean Christian books like this one to readers like me. I would also like to thank The Book Club Network Inc. for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.

I admit as an adoption advocate the idea of a mother searching for her stolen daughter was heart wrenching and drew me in almost instantly.
Kelly Maines was a character that connected with this Mama's heart and I couldn't help but root for her as she fought between achieving her dreams, healing, or finding peace with both. She was a real character to me not an overly clean Christian version of a hurting woman but a hurting woman looking for peace.

Likewise, Jack made me laugh, the confusion he faced re-entering the dating scene while dealing with an aging Nattie was balanced beautifully with his tangible love for a little girl who changed his life.

The Lewis' are good at spinning a plot.
The slow revealing of each character's story, the events that made them into the people they had become were beautifully woven together with each narrative flowing into the next. I felt it was a great illustration of just how easily lives can be intertwined without us realizing the destination. This is a great novel for readers who like their books to be a journey rather than something to be consumed.

This talent at spinning out their plot helps give the Lewis' characters depth and humanity. I would go as far as saying that it would be difficult for the target audience to not find at least one character with whom their resonate.

That said, at times, I'll admit, I was a bit frustrated by the over-description which occurred, particularly in the book's earlier chapters. Initial character description felt a little forced with details being added for the sake of adding details.

The positive side of this, if it wasn't for writing up a review, I would have easily forgot the awkwardness of these initial introductions with complete outfit descriptions thanks to the overwhelming charm and heart which followed.

I would highly recommend this book to any readers looking for a good solid novel with a lot of heart and none of the smut that so often ruins a good simple romance.

I like Beverly Lewis books. :) I've also read at least one of David Lewis' books, so it was interesting to read this book, the second that they've co-authored. It does have an Amish character who is central to the story, but it is not a "Amish" story.

This is the story of Kelly, who has spent the last eight years desperately and futilely searching for her lost daughter, Emily. Emily was kidnapped as a baby by Kelly's estranged husband, who sold her on the black market adoption agency and then died of an overdose shortly thereafter. Any clue to Emily's whereabouts died with him, and Kelly's private investigator has so far only turned up dead end leads. With her heath and finances about to give out, Kelly tries one last shot.

It's also the story of Jack, a flight instructor whose life revolves around his adopted eight-year-old niece/daughter....she had been adopted as a baby by his brother and sister in law, but when they died in a tragic car accident he was left as little Natalie's guardian. As she's growing older he decides maybe it's time for some stability in her life, more than just the Amish nanny, Laura, who takes care of her while Jack works. But after trying a few dates that flop royally, Jack kinda gives up the idea of getting Natalie a mother. Then he meets Kelly he thinks maybe he should give it another shot....until a Google search reveals that Kelly is still frantically searching for her lost daughter. Might Natalie be the one? Will Jack lose this little girl that's become his whole life? Will Kelly finally find the daughter she lost as an infant? And who IS Laura, anyway??

I really enjoyed this story....it was different and interesting, and plot twists keep you guessing right up to the end, even after you're SURE you've figured out where the story is going. I think David & Beverly need to team up again as they write well together and have turned out a couple of really great books so far!!

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my unbiased review.

What an incredibly enjoyable, heart-warming story! The child in the title is Nattie, a smart, affectionate, imaginative eight-year-old girl who is lovingly cared for by Jack, her bachelor uncle, and Laura, an Amish nanny. The uncle became her guardian when her adoptive parents died when she was four. The story of their lives provides one storyline, alternating with the story of Karen, who is unceasingly searching for her daughter, stolen from her eight years previously. The mixing of the two stories appears inevitable, but the twists and turns of the plot ensure that the reader will continue to turn pages long into the night to see how things will work out. In fact, the last 100 pages had many surprises that completely turned what was expected upside down before leading to a satisfying ending.
All of the characters are well-developed and extremely likeable, and it is easy to be emotionally drawn into their struggles, yearnings, and neediness. The reader just wants everyone to get their hearts’ desire. The faith of the characters is woven naturally into their stories as it is fundamental to their daily living. Questions are explored about times when God seems silent and the need to keep hope alive until He brings about His solutions in His perfect timing. As the author writes: “Familiar with the first clutches of despair, she brushed away tears, mentally tying a rope to her faith and holding on.” And “She felt strangely rejuvenated by the sense of losing everything. . . nothing to offer God in return for answers to her prayers, nothing but a small candle of faith to light in the darkness.” And “Without the darkness, we would all be deprived of the candle of faith.”
Although Laura is Amish, this isn’t “an Amish book”. The lives and situations of the characters are firmly planted in the English world. Karen’s desperate quest and lonely life is contrasted nicely with the warm family time in Nattie’s home. Jack’s feeble attempts at dating, and Nattie’s witticisms provide great touches of humor. The romantic segments are sweet, and the relationship between Jack and Nattie touching. Overall, the mood of the narrative is hopeful and encouraging and very satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and strongly recommend it. I received it through The Book Club Network in exchange for this my honest opinion.
